You need to highlight USUALLY. I remember specifically starting a few fights just waiting before I started to DPS, an even if I do nothing other than running around, the boss will target me even though the other three teammates have all done over half a damage bar of damage to the boss!
from what I personally have seen is that there seems to be a random element in what the AI chooses to target. Sometimes it goes right after the person furthest away and sometimes it just stomps on the person closest. But yes most of the time it'll target who ever is currently winning the DPS race
Generally when playing with my friend (who is not as far in the advancement as me and is alot squishier) the bosses usually go for him first until I do enough damage and they switch to me, but if I stop shooting them for a while (say to pick up health/ammo) they will switch back to him until I do enough damage again
On the other side, my teammates usually have the easiest boss kill ever.....
