You have to switch to private before you teleport to that map, so go back to hub, go to the map select the map you want to go, THEN hit private and then teleport there. You can't private a map you are already teleported into.

There is actually a broken things, but not the "you cannot switch" one.
You cannot switch the field you're already in into private mode. Get back to Albion and then open map, switch to private and teleport. Or change difficulty.

Broken part is if you first start private, but your friend joins map later on, lobby can become public even though it's listed as private for host who started the map (it's marked as public for late joiner).

It would be nice if the game would just drop you out of your current map into a private instance at the main teleporter.

Albion is always public, they don't let you make a private instance there for whatever reason.
For the other places, you can't change an already public session to private, so you have to set it to private before you warp there.

Go to Albion, go to world map and choose the areal you want. Before teleporting to the area click the Public icon to change it to Private. Did it mere hours ago myself.

You have to commit to going there/teleport after you switch modes or make it private/public from Albion. If you switch while looking at the map, then hit the ESC key to do something else, it will not apply and the settings will go back to what you had it set to.

And if anyone knows why you can’t do defense missions in private, please let me know. 🙂
