Sub attacks need something doing to them
As it stands having a maxed out melee sub attack mod is pointless as the damage the attack does at hard level is really mediocre not to mention the tracking, you will end up flying past them more time than not.

Its obvious that this was meant to be a version of Destinys "grenades" but they've not done it very well

What would you do to alter the sub attack

If anything, there's probably gonna be a descendant that excels at sub-attacks in the future.
You can create a sub attack build if you want to. Like every time you kill an mob with one, you get to use it again. Chance to recover HP. Get a temp defense.
The sub attack module actually gives you more points to spend.
You can knock or stagger an enemy long enough to defeat them. In special those with shield or immunity.
It's pretty satisfying to kill or hit one with that, after you grapple them.

the mod isn't pointless, you can put in the grappling mods there, there's 3 diff kinds so far. Also gives you more mod capacity as you level it up.

Ajax's sub attack is quite punchy and imo fun to use every now and then.
Also has 2 other attacks to follow up with if needed.

(1) Can sucker punch a mini group of enemies out of existence,
(2) grapple-punch and (3) stun a sub boss or lower for a few seconds.

Plus, like others have said, a fully upgraded and socketed sub mod will
generate 15 extra space (10 upgraded mod +5 from upgraded slot).
