Or, perhaps, you get sound cues that come from outside the map? Sometimes, you may be detecting a vault on the neighbouring map in this manner. It's a bit annoying.

The difficulty is also random.
I thought the non-directional deeper sound was to indicate you're near, but not close enough. The higher pitched sound that indicates direction should only happen when you're close enough? At least that'd make sense for me.
But as it is, it's completely random. I can be staring at an encrypted vault in front of me and still getting the useless non-directional sounds.
They are random but they typicaly are always around places with that little hologram on the floor. That where interactive maps help you narrow down areas.
