Does defense ACTUALLY do anything?
Seriously, rocking 22k+ defense, 1600+ shields, 800+ hp (all depends on the Descendant being used) and can get absolutely shredded even in Normal White Knight Gulch by as little as four enemies???????? Rocking over double the resistance for a Colossus with these stats, still get dropped like a fly with one hit, even with the mid level ones as if I have zero defense (I'm at Hard Dead Bride, fyi, but even normal devourer can still absolutely wreck me)?

Something seems broken here. I'm seeing the stats, but I'm not seeing the benefit of the stats...

I mean if you look at the description it says "reduces enemies attack" which obviously is mitigates damage.
Resistances say "reduces enemies fire/electric/toxic etc attack"

So if an enemy attacks you with normal damage, of say 1000 attack, you mitigate a % of that.
If the enemy attacks you while having 1000 Fire attack, then defense will not mitigate that, instead it will go to fire resistance.

This should be relatively easy to test out since there are areas with different enemies that deal elemental damage.

DEF is more valuable the more HP you have so you want to invest moderately into both.
2000HP with 50% dmg reduction has a lot more effective survivability than somebody with
100HP with 90% dmg reduction.
These numbers are nonsense, but the concept still applies in-game.

Defense does not apply to shields. Only on HP.

Which is why we told OP he needs to focus on HP more.

Okay, can someone tell me how you people getting 5000-9000 HP? I'm on level 55 and I still only have 2k hp and that's with +182% hp increase.

Depends on character, I suppose? Some have more *base HP* than others, which means higher base HP number is modified by the same mod will provide higher final HP numbers.

I was just telling my nephew that the reason he was dying so fast or getting 1-shot by trash mobs was because of their elemental attacks. He didnt realize that the Equipment Items on the Right Pane of the inventory drop with Elemental Resistances. Told him he needs to farm ones that have at least 1K+ in each resist, equip at least 1 of the 4 Descendant Modules that have resists the pertain to the Area/Boss fights and upgrade the 1 that has All Resists to at least a Tier 3 to get above Elemental 1500 resists. After that, problem solved!

Yeah it appears DEF and HP are king and shield is just a splash shield, seems 30k DEF and about 10k HP is ok for me, not sure on the DEF HP ratio yet.

edit: from what I read DEF only kicks in on your HP and not your shield.

Seems like it's the same system as Warframe. They also use the same mechanic.

not sure if TFD does the same but I wouldnt be surprised if it is atleast similar
https://warframe.fandom.com/wiki/Armor?so=search
According to in-game tooltip of DEF stat in TFD, it maxes out at 80% dmg reduction. Doesn't state at which numbers though...

i think that is the amount you can be debuffed for.

i just confirmed that 80% is how much the enemies debuff can take off ur def rating so they can't go above 80% i have 15K Def and only 1300HP but alot of enemies later into the game will have the Def debuff skill and if it hits you say good bye to 80% of that total rating you have.

you can put def up as much as you want but keep in mind i think Ajax has skills that scale off Def Stat so if you are not using a class that needs alot of def rating don't put it up by alot.

i would say around 10K def is pretty good if you don't want alot of HP aswell but for Hard Mode you will need alot more Def and HP and Damage

DEF does indeed work, I'm rolling with 52k def, 6.2k hp, and mere 500 shield and I feel invincible, if I could I would reduce my shield to 0, I don't need it, but what's more; your def affects your shield, so you can roll with high def, high shield and no hp, there's even mod that boosts your def significaly but sets your HP at 1, it's called "Overwhelming DEF"
Clickshe Jul 8, 2024 @ 7:19am
Defense doesn't affect shields, it affects your health. As others here have said, your health amount is the problem, not your defense. Right now, unlike in the 2023 test, defense actually matters.

there's a bug with that mod right now so i would hold off with maxing it out seem it breaks ur class for good

That is straight out wrong, DEF reduces the damage your shields take, there's even a mod I already mentioned that pernamently sets your HP to 1 so you can roll shields+DEF only
