Ammo economy balanced?
I may be playing this wrong but I keep running out of ammo. I generally mix up weapons and abilities but this doesn't really make that much difference. Abilities are really slow to regen leaving guns the main choice to deal with enemies.

No need to reload shotguns as you get 5 shots and then wait a really long time before more ammo drops. Same with snipers. I know they probably don't want us running around with too much shotty/sniper ammo but that just means everyone runs sub-machine guns and auto rifles which IMO gets old fast. Am I supposed to be jumping into inventory and switching to different weapon/ammo types?

The 2nd boss electric boogaloo lady I clean run out of ammo before the 3rd round of ads pops in.

Ive spent a total of 2k hours between Destiny 2 and Warframe and ammo isn't a problem.

Or am I just playing the game wrong?

If you've done Destiny 2, I take it you know to keep each weapon with a different ammo type but I'm just going to throw it out there for those who aren't aware, don't double or triple up on weapons that uses the same ammo color as they will pull from the same pool.

The ammo loop for TFD seems to be a lot more strict so you need to put in extra work to keep ammo counts good. Either modding to help recover more ammo or raise your max, or put in more attention to your weapon's fire rate. Since the max ammo is the same between weapons of that ammo type, high damage low fire rate are significantly more ammo efficient so you want to have one weapon with that focus instead of raw DPS.

I ran through the story with a White high DPS, and a Green high single shot damage and never had much ammo problems. However, before when I was just using whatever high fire rate Handcannon or Scout Rifle I got, I had ammo problems occasionally because it was too easy to chew through the ammo reserves for them.

I always use a white, green, and purple weapon in my setup and cast skills regularly. I beat Devourer yesterday and no ammo problem so far. Maybe your gun is underpowered, remember to upgrade your gun modules too.

The key item to use heavy weapons is "When acquiring dropped impact rounds, change to 1 High-Powered Round for every 25 rounds". You can upgrade it and it will occupy less energy.

Three things.

1. Your statement I quoted is incorrect. There are Three types of high powered 'sniper' variants. Two of them use Impact rounds, instead of Heavy rounds. Shotguns share Heavy rounds along with the highest power type sniper rifles and launchers.

There are many other options if you utilize Impact Round variations. The purpose of Heavy Rounds is for making those BIG damage shots on KEY targets, such as Immunity Phase targets and End Bosses, etc. Impact Round guns do a FANTASTIC job at taking out those Weak Points on Collosi.

You can EASILY switch your weapon types mid fight, to cycle between the 4 ammo types.

2. Utilize Ammo Conversion cards. Yes they can take up valuable slot space, but if you are having the issue of running out of ammunition, then they will definitely help you out.

3. Be mindful of what weapons you are bringin into the fight. Don't bring in a low damage per shot high Fire Rate gun to a Collosi fight. You will just chew threw your ammo. Bring in a High Damage per shot low Fire Rate gun. There are even cards you can add to your weapons to lower the Fire Rate and increase the damage per shot, combo. This is the BEST way to maximize your ammunition.

Keeping these 3 points in mind, if you still are running out of ammunition, then either you are too low level for that content (or your weapon is under-level) or your team mates suck.

Good Luck.
