That said, based on my own experience so far (both Ajax and Bunny are at 40), no you don't need to switch descendants often. For void fragments, it's just about finding one that matches your skills, so for Bunny, finding an arc/electric fragment to activate. Alternatively, you can tag along with someone who matches a fragment as well. As far as I can tell, the only time you "need" to switch is when doing character specific quests, such as Bunny finding out about her family.
Basically in all my playtime, I've done most things as Ajax, especially the story and quests, not needing to switch, so you should be good to stay as who you like.
