So how else are the characters earnt?

Currently it's only by paying. But everything is farmable. Just play the game and farm for the characters. In their dev notes they mentioned we could get a trading system. So might be able to trade paid currency in the future just like Warframe.

can we even earn caliber, need an official response to that information, because there are many things which require this premium resource and if we cannot earn it, via trade of something?

there is no trade. and you can only get caliber from cash shop.
as for what require them as far as i've seen only skin(and spray emote etc ...) and dye are caliber only. other things can be farmed

Essentially I am playing with my son. He chose Ajax and now wants to try another character but he cannot without Calibre. If it can be earned or unlocked in game then no worries but if it is all locked behind premium currency it will be uninstalled immediately.

he can. he just need to farm the component to craft another one.
Check Map-> Access Info -> Descendant and check were to get the part for the descendant you want.

You just gotta grind the materials required to craft the different characters. Now how long thats gonna take or how hard that is I don't know.

first character you can unlock additionally is "bunny" - there is a quest chain in the 2nd area (kingston) leading you through all missions to get the needed parts to craft bunny

they remove calibur from battle pass last test you earn 400 calibur for free sadly to say

You unlock the characters with EITHER calibur, or in game materials. So if you wanted Bunny, you can either pay the 600 calibur, or find the 4 materials and pay 400,000 in game gold. It's either or, not both.

And the caliber bundle being sold is 250 for 5 bucks which leaves you 50 short for an unlock... classic nexon.
All in all this is OP fault for having an indecisive kid. Its your fault OP!
Now get your wallet out and buy an overpriced caliber bundle that will always leave you short for unlocks!
