Why does Nexon shut down their games?

I enjoy the game so far and want to dip more time into it.

I've never played a Nexon game before, and can read they apparently shut down 99 percent of their games.

Is it because the games aren't profitable or why on earth would Nexon develop something just to shut it down ?

Nexons reputation could ruin this game and I'm hesitant on using time and money because of that.

Business model for cash grab games. Short lifespan to milk whales until the next cash grab is ready.
As long as you refrain from spending money on their "free to play" cash grab until you are absolutely sure it deserves support, based on your own hours of gameplay, you should be fine.

Because they're barely disguised data mining malware no sane person would use.

Go read their EULA. They straight up tell they make data miners disguised as games.

As soon as a game stops making a profit, Nexon immediately trashes it. That's the way it's always been. The only exception is Vindictus, but apparently the game still generating some income...
