The shooting is fine, but not everyone would agree. What is smooth to one, is clunky to another. It's worth giving a try.
I didn't play the latest test, but I did play one of the earlier ones.
1. Gunplay is actually quite good, lots of different gun types from pistols to under slung cannons.
2. World design is the game's weak point, the maps are quite barren and empty between the exciting bits. I'm told the most recent test had partially addressed this by adding in more crap to the empty world to try and make it feel less lifeless and unfinished.
3. Story is... Well crap. But noone really cares about that in a looter-shooter. The cinematics are good though.
4. Movement/traversal felt solid and polished for me, though again I'm told they changed that in the most recent tests and it got a little worse. (Described as iceskatey to me.) I believe they wanted to make these more fast paced and just went overboard on it.
I found the game to be... OK. Nothing special about it, it's a generic run of the mill looter shooter. It won't be anyone's "MAIN GAME" going forward, but it'd be fun for a while or as a backup game.
Once Human is clunky garbage lol
I didn't think the shooting was clunky in once human, but dear god the movement sure as hell was clunky in that.
The shooter gameplay is smooth, with various guns to loot, ranging from pistols and rifles to heavy energy weapons, etc. In the beta version, there are quite a few guns, but the official release might have even more.
There are different open-world zones to explore and farming, or simply enjoy and admire your adorable Descendant's booty. There are mission points on the maps that activate when you reach them. You can always run away from these points whenever you feel you're about to get beaten up. The areas between points on the map are still quite expansive (it's somewhat like D2 but feels a bit broader). Explore... then grind the dungeons. There are a few purple mission points on the map with rewards and challenges. You can choose to help other players like a hero or leave them to run alone while they struggle.
Complete missions like Defense or Survival similar to D2 and WF with a group of 4 people. Fight bosses (grind bosses, lol), who will drop rare and essential loot for you to upgrade and craft.
The animation is smooth in most parts. However, the hitbox can sometimes be very frustrating; Bunny often gets stuck while running when caught by minions, or melee enemies hit you even when you've backed away a bit. The minions' animation in the beta is still quite rough; the minion's animation in tutorial missions seems smoother than in the main game (the official release might be better for the minions).
The strength of bosses and minions spikes significantly at higher levels. From my personal experience, after just five rounds, the minions start to become beasts that massacre you. The same goes for bosses. You'll hit a wall quickly and need to go back to grind and upgrade, carefully considering your build/weapon before challenging them again.
The First Descendant has features of both Destiny 2 and Warframe. The quality of TFD can be considered quite good, at least better than WF in 2013 in terms of gameplay and graphics. The initial content volume of TFD can't compare to games that have been around for 6-10 years like the two mentioned. But it certainly has more content than the initial releases of D2 and WF.
However the game has fun combat. Good looking characters, good loot and great story cutscenes. If they can fix the stagnant map zones, this might be a very big hit MMO wise.
There are different things hidden around the map for you to find. The story is basically that the planet is war ravaged and the hub is a last hold out for humanity. It would not make sense for the world to be "living and breathing."
A lack of attention paid on your part does not constitute a presence of bad design on the game's part.
World is boring. What more need I explain?
Just because your standards are lower, does not make it not boring for some.
Hard to be 'incentivised' when something is boring.
I read in the Dev Notes that they have improved many things after the Beta for the map, added more activities, discovery points, environmental effects and sounds, as well as resource rotation features in the areas, etc. Players have been complaining about the lack of activities on the open-world map since the early Beta. They have been working on these issues and will continue to do so even after the official release.
Feel free to keep complaining about everything you find, but only after the game is officially released and you encounter them during gameplay. They will continue to gather feedback afterward. You may have forgotten or haven't read their recent Dev Notes!
As for the lack of vibrancy in the map, D2 wasn’t much better. And WF only felt lively for the first 15 minutes of exploring each map. After all, they are all shooting ranges for the players, and occupied areas by enemys are just for the plot.
