Grinding in the open world is more adapted for two players. I mean you can do this, but sometimes it can be failable.
Dungeons not adapted for single player (you can do them if you are a shooter player, but sometimes still can be hard).
Boss portals scaled for single player since technical beta, so its you can do it solo (and if you know how to play - it will be better than group atm).
Anyway, you always can enter to matchmaking.
So, you no need team up (well at least for leveling up to lvl19 as it was on technical beta), but you should if you can.
You don't need to talk to anyone, Everyone knows what to do unless they are complete noobs.
You can easily roam the open world area and solo. Then auto join groups for dungeons or bosses and jump back out into the solo experience on done.
If you need a battle-partner, feel free to friend request. I have a good bit of social anxiety I struggle with, so guaranteed won't be using the mic and therefor you don't have to speak.
I'm also the kinda player who doesn't care much for maximum benefits, would never judge you for a mistake or so. I play to relax and don't get frustrated if our progress (or difficulty level) isn't optimum. But I also don't screw around to ruin things on purpose, or ragequit heh.
So, in the case you find yourself in a situation where you can't find anyone to play with, feel free to msg or something :)
Either way, good soloing and co-op friend luck o/
But generally, all the other content is doable solo or with the random matchmaking. Of course if you want to push for higher waves for better rewards, same problem as most tend to bail early and it's impossible to clear without a team.
Not just pew pew, shoot all day. Solo has to deal with full force of the lethal damage as you are the only one being chased as well as whatever status effect being spammed...
