Ys Origin
[SOLVED] Black screen when alt-tabbing or exiting game, can only boot computer, help needed.
Hiya!

My gf bought Ys Origin, but she's having weird problem that no-one else seems to have, at least after lots of googling.

When exiting the game, or alt-tabbing to windows, screen goes black and it's not possible to do anything other than boot the computer. Ctrl+alt+del, Alt+F4, waiting for 15 minutes (max that we waited) doesn't help at all. We can hear the game-sound on the background though, but nothing else happens. Only solution is to boot the computer :\

We tried to run the game in compatibility modes and disabling Windows themes, which worked for few game-sessions, but then it started going it again with the same settings.

My gf has Windows 7 as operating system, gtx460 graphics card and i5 760 CPU. Game is installed into SSD.

Can anyone help with this problem? Ys Origin is awesome game, but this issue is making us not want to play it at all because we tend to alt-tab a lot from games and all that.

EDIT:
PROBLEM FOUND AND FIXED: My gf has Comodo Firefall, and for some reason that firewall messes up with the game somehow so that when you exit or alt-tab, you get the black screen. Disabling Comodo firefall or putting it to gaming-mode resolves the issue.

EDIT2: Another solution found, thanks to Barnestormer in the comments:

Finally found a fix for this on some Microsoft Forums. You have to change your windows display adapter settings to have a 60hz refresh rate instead of the default 59hz.

1. Windows Key
2. Display - Click Display Settings
3. Click Advanced Display Settings
4. Click Display adapter properties
5. Click List all modes
6. Choose your resolution @ 60hz.

Worked for me. Was getting black screen lockups in DS3, CS:GO and a handful of others. Cheers!

Same here: Thinkpad W530 with Quadro K2000M and Core i7 3rd gen on Windows 10 1607 14393.5. The problem didn't occur with the last major build of Windows (1511). — No firewall problem!
So I've been having this problem for that last week and I've been forced to restart as well but today I realized that its a display issue so I unplugged and replugged in the display from the back of my computer and it came back on like normal. I'll do more testing to find out the specific issue but here's a temp solution so you dont have to kill your machine each time. :)
They really need to fix the problem. I have the same problem here as well.
Same valve pls fix

Hello Steam Community & Beyond,

Bump. I have information of the source. I found a fix. I also agree with Dexter and can confirm this fix. For me, I run @180Hz on DP (Display Port), on Dark Souls III, the first launch and exit was fine, afterwards, I went back into the title screen, Ctrl + Alt + Delete, boom the black screen with sound :steamfacepalm:. My first assumption was my DP (Display Port), I unplugged it from my monitor and plugged it back in, my screen was thereafter fixed without reboot. Maybe Steam or Microsoft, or even the latest updates by our graphic card brands may be able to help with this information, since so many people seem to have the same problem. I hope this helps people to at least to where they do not have to reboot anymore for the moment :steamhappy:.

I have the same problem, but found out that playing games in Borderless Mode fix the issue, for now... is it possible we have a memory leak problem ?

Hey,

It's something to think about, Gochujang, there could possibly be some memory leaks, only just in fullscreen causing the video card and monitor to loose signal with each other. I would not bet on anything, though, as the culprit. Seemingly, regardless of what OS, or how new or old the specifications are, the same issue seems to occur. Somewhat leans towards driver or software updates being the problem. Time will fix bugs and introduce more unfortunately. Our result objective is to have minimal bugs that are harmless.

I have the same issue. Can happen anytime exiting or entering what is called "Full Screen Exclusive" mode. What we gamers know as simply Full Screen.

Luckily I have figured out that simply turning my monitor off and back on also resets the picture. I am using HDMI and it does it. This leads me to believe this is some sort of syncing issue or perhaps even a HDCP issue.

Thus far I think everyone I've heard of experiencing this is using NVidia cards, so I am guessing it is a problem on their end.
I'm pretty sure this problem is caused by Gsync monitors . Some games have limited FPS like Dark Souls series so you need to turn off Gsync(set monitor to fixed refresh rate) for these kind of games (at least that fixed the problem for me) .
I know this is old but i am gonna leave here what fixed it for me for any ppl still having an issue...
Enabling VSR (Virtual Super Resolution) and GPU scaling worked for me like a charm.
Ok, I am on Windows 10 and I am having this issue as well but none of the above solutions do jack. When playing Left 4 Dead 2 and I exit, the screen stays black. There is no sound as the game closed successfully, however if I unplug the monitor's DVI cable and immediately plug it back in my screen is back and active. I did not have this issue until I had to get a new monitor. Any and all other operations on my machine is fine, except Steam gaming. When game closes I am stuck with unplugging and replugging my monitor any solution to fix this rather annoying bug would be great. Sys: Intel Core 2 Quad 8GB Ram AMD(legacy ATi 4890) ACER 1920x1080 Monitor H233H
Mine didn't start happening until I upgraded from an AMD card to a NVidia card. I think this SPECIFIC problem may be exclusive to NVidia. (And yes, I did a driver clean, in fact I did a whole Windows reinstall from scratch to try to fix this)

Can't wait for AMD to put out a card comparable to the 1070... :(
this is so freaking irritating i need a fix pls :sadz:
Happens to me too. Mine occurs on GTA 5. But what if I buy more games, pay more money, and this happens again?
Happens to me too, reinstalled windows 10 , worked like a charm for a couple of days until windows installed updates and ruined it again =)

WE NEED A FIX! Im playing with eyefiniti triple monitor and i am using a display port too.

What i noticed though that is it only happens with source engine games, such as CS GO or Left 4 Dead 2.

No Problems with Doom or Gta etc.
