Ys Origin

How do I change language text in the game?
I've just redownloaded Ys Origin to replay for the first time in 10 years or so, and when I boot up the game all my text is displayed in Japanese. I can't seem to figure out how to change it back to English. Any help would be very appreciated.

The Steam version only supports English, French, Italian , German. Spanish - Spain.
But you said Japanese, are you sure you are not using any unspecified mod/version of the game? If yes then you have to sort it out yourself, remove/reinstall or whatever, no one can help.

Other than that, to change a language normally go to Steam Library > right-click on Ys Origin from left bar, General Tab > Select Language according to above.

I've taken a screenshot of the options screen in game, but I don't post often at all so I can't figure out how to post that here. I made sure to check and verified I actually bought the game here on Steam and I did, so I should have the correct version no mods, and sadly I cannot find any options to change language under the General Tab for Ys Origins. Although I've found and adjusted the language for other games that way, it just doesn't display a language tab for Ys Origins for me.

That's impossible, the Language should be available in the General tab, and I also check Ys Origin is not "unavailable" for any region in the case you're traveling aboard.

Are you sure you are not affiliating Ys Origin with any other 3rd party programs like GOG Galaxy for example, that might affect the ability change the language?

Also you can use Imgur online web image posting service (like above) to post any image quickly and share link here, without the need for account, etc.

Sorry, I was in process of reinstalling the game when I took that screenshot of my General tab. Sadly, it's the same even after installation.

Definitely something is wrong with your Steam Client, at first yours looking a lot different than mine - there is no Installed Files tab

If you install Ys Origin properly, well for any game actually, you should be able to see that tab to indicate your game installation folder.

Well after the reinstallation it does show but hmmm... anyway, would you mind show your game version, like this? Just to make sure our games match.

Also I don't well of your computer environment so I can only guess:
- Are you perhaps using Steam beta client? The language feature might not work correctly for this game (though I highly doubt this was the case)
- Somehow my guts telling me you are installing the game on top of unofficial Japanese version you already installed, so when you uninstall the game, make sure to go check directly at game installation folder not to have any leftover files.
- Well with the 2nd point perhaps you might try changing the installation folder to somwhere else, different disk as well.

Sure, here is my game version.

I have installed the game to another drive separate from my normal Steam folder, and still have the same problem. One oddity I've noticed is a Galaxy.dll file that does seem to be linked to GoG Galaxy like you mentioned before keeps being installed whenever I reinstall the game. I've tried deleting the file manually, but after verification of the game files in Steam, it re-installs the same Galaxy.dll file. I've checked GoG and it says nothing about being linked with my Steam library that I can find.

Actually Galaxy.dll is fine, for the purpose of combining GOG & Steam Version as one and for convenience.

How about Ys Origin Configuration Launcher? You can launch it by pressing Play button from Steam Library or go directly to game folder

Also can I get a glimpse of your game folder? If yours still have Japanese text there must be Japanese files within.

And two folders of your save files

First one should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[your user id]\207350\remote
Second one should be C:\Users\[your user name]\Saved Games\FALCOM\yso_win

The second one should be the default path for Cloud Save now though.

I also checked to be sure that I'm not using a beta client, and everything seems to be normal with no beta chosen.

Okay, here is the Config Launcher.

Okay I think I see the problem now, yours missing 3 files (mine is 22 files in total, yours is 18)

data_us.na
data_us.ni
data_us.nu

I don't know how it happened, but it happened.
Let's try game installation verification again and see if Steam can get those 3 files back.
If it doesn't work, here is the link to these files, put them into the game folder and try again.

I know I know, never download from strangers, so please use all the antivirus you have to scan it,

That was it exactly. Thank you so much for your help.. I don't really understand why Steam will not install those files itself, but using the files you provided for me fixed the problem. Now I can enjoy being able to read everything as I play. Again, bless you for your time and thank you very much.

I'm glad it was solved, the only guesses I could think of why is perhaps

1/ Steam downloaded all 3 files, but perhaps your antivirus/Window Defender or sth else mistook it as intrusive hence deletion (well I installed the game since Dec 2023 but who knows if the files change after which leads to the detection). You can try checking the logs if there's any activity on that.

2/ Or just the Steam downloader kinda went broken hence missing files.

3/ Or XSEED did something with the game database and Steam failed to download all 3.

Weird... anyway, please enjoy the game !
