if I didn't like YS
memories of celceta... and 8 would I like this? Thought both stories were terrible, and the gameplay to be meh. Fun at first boring after a few hours is this one any better?

did u finish the other ones? I really didn't like celceta, 8 was ok for a bit, but got kinda boring 6 or so hours in...
so the game play is fun? have u played hades? is it like that? I liked hades for about 5 hours, now I,m bored of it....

The stories are barebones because they aren't the focus of the series. Origin is no exception. Only play if you like the combat, which is significantly different here than it was in Celceta and Dana. Check the videos on the store page to get an idea. It's a solo hack n' slash with a handful of abilities unlocked at set points in the story. Simple but fast-paced and challenging.

Celceta is a weak entry in the series, keep that in mind.

Ys VIII on the other hand was considered great.

I'd suggest you to do Felghana and this one if you didn't like the party system.

PS: Keep also in mind that the series' mostly about lore elements and each are separate episodes in the same universe (except Ys 2 which is the second part of the first game)

Both VIII and Celceta have more efforts in building up storyline, with VIII being among the greatest of Ys series imho (but it really took time to heat up as it was 50hrs+ game after all), yet you found them not engaging enough then high chance you won't be into older Ys titles. After all, older games' stories were much more simplified, very Hero-save-the-day tone - you explore things, you face issues, you solve the issues and fight the villains, meanwhile the background lore being vague requires you to read further on Wiki/Artbooks if interested.

About the gameplay, older Ys games are more hardcore (from I to VI except V) than newer games (from SEVEN to IX Monstrum currently) because they contain classic nightmare elements - bullet-hell + homing attacks, high dmg dealing, platforming, traps, etc. I'm not saying newer games cannot be challenging, but having Flash Guard and Flash Move can help you cheesing bosses and survive better, plus gears and healing support. Meanwhile, you don't f*cking around in Origin or Felghana for example on higher difficulties, no healing, no parties, strict on mana/SP usage and guard timing, some fights can be too intense requiring you to focus 100% all the time, else you will face 'Game over' screen less than 10 seconds. Even more nightmarish when having achievements require beating Boss Rush that can take more than 2 hours with practice, even up to 11h+ if you went totally unprepared but still trying. And considering your experience with such hardcore title like Hades, you might get bored soon as well, not because of the bosses, but struggling in the dungeon alone is painful enough already - you cannot overlevel and upgrade as you like (technically you can still grind but very tedious process), enemies hit pretty hard and can be troublesome to fight against.

TL;DR - Older Ys titles are for players who don't mind simple storyline, and at the same time not being afraid of facing the Nightmare. And if you get attached to them longer you eventually could feel/appreciate something great from them, but that is if you survived. Or just forget everything I said if you're already a hardcore gamer.

I played celceta and recentrly viii with just one achievement away from completing viii but honestly i dont feel like touching them again, Ys viii is better than celceta though. I havent played hades but it looks like a game i enjoy since i like roguelite and roguelike games. Ys origin imo has a more interesting story that is linked with ys 1,2,celceta and napishtim, is more challenging and doesnt have endless cutscenes like celceta or ys viii. It looks like action rpgs are not your cup of tea, if you are interested in ys origin i suggest you watch reviews and walkthroughs to decide wether or not you will enjoy it. I loved ys origin btw.

Yes, you might like it. It has less RPG bloat and it focuses more on platforming. I consider it a platformer. A very good platformer.

Ys Origin has them more like metroidvania than RPG.

I wouldn't say Metroidvania, the game is just one big dungeon but you don't need to backtrack this much to unlock new things, it's much more linear than Napishtim or Felghana.

It's more like Diablo in a way.

This is the only Ys game where I gave a ♥♥♥♥ about the story. Characters have a lot of interactions with each other and all 3 of the main playable characters have a clear arc with big climax moments that define them and are iconic to their stories. The only other games in the series that I gave any amount of ♥♥♥♥ when it comes to the characters and story are Ys1 and 2. And they deserve the respect too, hell you can even talk to every single enemy and get a unique dialogue in Ys 2. Also, Adol is not the main character in this game, meaning you actually give a ♥♥♥♥ about what your characters say. And yes, I did say characters because you have 3 of them in this game and all 3 of them actually speak.

As for gameplay, this game is actually challenging and is more straightforward. One of my problems with later Ys games is that a lot of the time they feel like number porn/ brain dead hack and slash. Like, I never needed to think about how to approach a boss fight, I just went in and beat them without a care. Keep in mind, I play these games on Nightmare. Even my first run of Ys1 and 2 were on Nightmare (YEAH I SLAYED THAT SCREEN SAVER ON NIGHTMARE!!!) They are still good but after my first run, I never go back to them. I tried it with Celcetea to get the remaining achievements that I was missing but I just couldn't get into the game again and dropped it.
