As for gamepad vs. keyboard, well, I actually don't use any gamepad with my PC, but I enjoyed this game just fine with keyboard alone. There's also a possibility of using keyboard and mouse, which I haven't tried. I think that with mouse or with gamepad (with analog stick) you can move in all directions, while with keyboard you're limited to eight directions, but I've never run into any situation where I needed finer direction control than just eight directions.
Play the whole series with a controller, it's definitely best
The great thing is that all the games released for PC so far support every kind of controller, I tried with a cheap USB one, the XBOX bluetooth one etc. and they're all supported.
I'd suggest to anyone to play even with only a cheap controller, I can't even imagine how difficult could be to play and replay these games on keyboard with all the puzzles and jump things, especially 'cos unlike the SNES Final Fantasys and so on it's 3d and many bosses need strategy, jumping, running..
Yes, Ys can be played with only the keyboard, although you won't get full-grained analog movement.
