Ys 4 was remade into Ys: Memories of Celceta.
Ys 5 has not yet been remade.
Also, 4 takes place before 3.
Seven takes place...sometime between 2 and 6, I forgot when.
Origin takes place 700 years before 1.
That said, that's just the chronological order; that's not necessarily the recommended order for playing them. The games are largely standalone, except for Ys 1&2.
Just make sure you wait to play Ys 2 until after you finish Ys 1 (they are essentially two chapters of the same game).
But thanks for the help guys, I jumped right from ys 1+2 to ys 6 so I had no context at all what adol was doing on a ship.
Ships get into accidents when he is on them.
Seven is the last one chronologically (at least until the next game comes out, which is supposedly afterward), and Geis running around with the fairies doesn't really leave it any room to take place any earlier.
You're probably thinking of 8, which takes place between 5 and 6.
In the canonical serie (because the remakes are overwritting the original version of the game they're based off) is simply:
Origin - Chronicles - Memories of Celceta - Oath in Felghana - Sands of Kefin - Lacrimosa of Dana - Ark of Napisthim - Seven - Monstrum Nox
Then the release order (now it's complicated), there were Ys 1 vanished omen - Ys 2 final chapter - Ys 3 wanderer from Ys - Ys 4 Mask of Sun - Ys 4 Dawn of Ys (yes, there were two different versions of Ys 4 but the remake was based of Mask) - Ys 5 Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand
Then there were a 8 years gap before Ys 6 the Ark of Napishtim was released as the newest entry (and soft-rebooting the entire serie) because Kefin sold poorly.
Also Ys 1&2 got remade in the late 90's with Ys Eternal and Ys Complete (Chronicles is based of the last one).
Hope I wasn't too confusing in my explanation
YS 1 and 2 are the first games.
YS III alias Wanderers of YS was the "original" third part. Oath in Felghana is a remake of that game.
YS IV had 2 versions: Dawn of Ys and Mask of the Sun. Celceta is also a remake of these.
YS 5 was never released outside Japan.
Story-wise, YS 8 plays before YS 6 and 7, but does not really have a connection to those two games.
You definitely should play YS 1 before 2 and 6 before 7. Other than that the games are more or less independent. I played 1 first, then 2 (but didn't finish it), Origins, 6, Felghana, 7, 8 and then Celceta and didn't really feel like playing something in the wrong order.
That's not correct. Rather, the origins are a game that is literally called "Ys: Origin" and it's before Ys 1 and Ys 2.
Ys Origin (But it's only good to be played AFTER Ys I and II chronicles since a lot of characters can only have their depth and right feelings attached to them if you know Ys I and II stories).
Ys I and II chronicles - 700 years after Ys Origin.
Ys III is now known as Ys: Yhe Oath in Felghana.
Ys IV had two games, Mask of the Sun and The Dawn of Ys. They both now exists as Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta, who merged the two stories making all the inconsistencies between the two previous titles to disapear.
Ys V: Lost Kefin sadly wasn't remade yet. And as far as I know, there's not a good way to play it right now.
Now, canonicaly, Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana happens AFTER Ys V: Lost Kefin because the first sword you had on that game IS the last sword you have on Lost Kefin.
Ys VI: The Ark of Naphistim is the next game after Ys 8 canonicaly, but the engine was the first for the Ys Origin, while Ys Origin was the last on that engine. This means the gameplay here will be kinda dificult and boring sometimes because it lacks all of the implementations added on Oath in Felghana and Origin.
Ys VII or Ys 7 is the next game after Ark of Naphistim, and the first of the new system that exists today.
This means that, for you to play canonically instead of Release wise, you will need to play on this order.
The problem with this order, sadly is, of course, some games that "happens" sooner than others have the Latest engine for that play style. For example, After Ys I and II, the next engine for the game we have now was Ys VI. But the story after Ys II is Ys: The Oath in Felghana. And Ys Origin should be played before this one, and Origin is the last game on that engine. So you will be playing kinda backwards on the engine and you WILL feel the bad stuff way more than the good stuff on each playthrough because instead of play and see the fixes on the engines, you will feel the downgrade. Specialy on Ys VI and Ys VII, they both were the first time the game was introduced on that engine, and both of them have grotesque limitations if we compare them with the next release of the games.
Now, the order of release however is:
Ys I and II.
Ys VI.
Ys The Oath in Felghana.
Ys Origin
Ys The Ark of Naphistim
Ys Foliage Ocean in Celceta
Ys 8.
All of those games are now on Steam at least. So you have no problem playing them. If you want to follow the order of the story or the order of release, it's up to you.
Right now it's just like Playing Kingdom Hearts on PS4. You will have all in order of story, but you will feel the downgrade sometimes because of it.
Have to replay Ark. What would be nice is a game that takes place in that era that shows the full picture. Sort of a Prequel Origin to Origin. Too many series are great at 'telling the story' but not 'showing the story' when it comes to the absolute beginning.
Unless Falcom decides to make an OVA about the "Golden Age" of Ys
