It's funny how we forget. Apparently there was something about V.A.T.S in the Fallout 4 tutorial but I completely missed it and played 20 hours before somebody pointed out I was playing the game wrong.
But to OP's original question, it's literally just chase the ball. Like any puzzle, some of them are very easy and forgiving, and some are very tricky and require jumping and flying and precise platforming. I don't think the controls in this game are good enough for what some of them want us to do. If I see that the echo is wanting me to land on tricky platforms, I just walk away. Supposedly none of the puzzles in this game are random, so somebody made the path they take. They just show up randomly like most other open world puzzles.
