Not dead, and its a great game.
As another poster said earlier, there isn't a large player base and "one of the best times to be online would be between 12:00pm and 5:00PM (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)". During these times I could pretty much always find players. Sometimes with some waiting, but I enjoyed plenty of games over the last 3 days.
So, you can find players, you just need to look at a certain time of day and have a moderate amount of patience. The game is fun and not dead. But it is not an instant match any time of day kind of game. Some parts of the day you might not find anyone to play with.
It would be good if there were not only PvP modes. Say what some more missions against bots in the breakthrough mode or survival.
However: It has a great game diversity, choice of ships, equipment, and many cooperative tactics that can make this game very enjoyable.
It seems most akin to navy field with a slight dota spin on it. Yes, it can be hard to find a game. But when I have gotten into a game, it's been worth it.
I wish Stellar Impact the best, and I do think if it went freemium, they'd get more users.
