Scarlet: Is definitely the strongest IMO. all her skills synergize well and she has the best quest skills. she's the only character I've reliably gotten 1.5k+ crits with and never have any fear of dying due to the best defensive skill in human and the jump slam that dodges attack in werewolf. Over all it doesn't matter what skills you're given with her you will have a solid build.
Pied piper: Is powerful as well but some of his skills lack the synergize and power that scarlet's does. Definitely a safer option and powerful with the right skills. I've only played solo but he definitely seems to be team oriented but can solo as well. My best run with him I killed a nightmare 3 boss in under 30 seconds. Biggest drawback for pied piper is if you're not given some of his core skills like the extra notes on powerful after hitting a target with your defensive skill his damage can be lack luster
Beowulf: I want to like beowulf but to be truly effective you really need to be given the right skills together. i've had some runs where I get the attack speed+ crit on trait, increased whirlwind rotations, double powerful swings which are all good, But they work better if combined with skills that also buff those attacks. as you're only buffing one skill per full rotation with the wyrm you really want to lean into buffing one attack out and not spreading your skill points around. very solid and his shield can prevent some massive damage as you can pull it up very quickly but he is a little too reliant on good skill set ups to feel effective.
overall though not bad.
Frostqueen: only played her twice but both times I had the same feeling she's alittle slow to start but once she starts warming up and thaws out she decimates the field. extremely good skills that combo together and blow up enemies. haven't had any games where I just got bad skills. Definitely a solid character if not tied with piper for 2nd.
Aladdin: seemed like a good character, only played him 2-3 times, definitely right up there as a solid character, his wishes seem definitely good for group play and his damage is consistent. not a lot of familiarity with his rank up perks so can't really comment there. the biggest issue I have with him is similar to beowulf in that he is a higher skill gap character to play. definitely a solid character in the right hands.
Melusine: kind of scared to try her solo. all her skills seem to be group oriented support will give her a go in a bit but she seems extremely valuable in group play.
You'll be fine just focusing on the "soloplayer" upgrades. So far the game never forced me to pick two "teamplay" upgrade options which is nice.
