Producer's Letter - 5/21/15
Greetings!

It’s been extremely busy and fun for us here on the DDO team this year and we feel the time is right to provide an update on some of our plans over the next few months.

We’ve made some excellent strides to reduce lag and improve stability, and we are continuing to work towards these goals. One of the larger projects that we are working on is a transfer of our game servers and other hardware to a new data center. The new facility will provide both Dungeons and Dragons Online and our friends over at The Lord of the Rings Online with more stability, greater CPU power, and a better networking capability. This will complement our ongoing efforts to reduce lag. It’s a big project and as the year progresses we will be working toward a date where we will migrate to the new datacenter.

Update 26 is coming in June, and it will focus mainly on a new class; the Warlock! Warlocks make pacts with powerful otherworldly patrons and channel that eldritch power into powerful blasts and arcane spells. The Warlock can choose a pact with Fiends, Archfey, or even a Great Old One. The Warlock will also have three enhancement trees; the Tainted Scholar, the Souleater, and the Enlightened Spirit.

Update 27 will follow in July. It includes an all-new adventure pack that returns to Shavarath, showcasing the Archons’ side of its endless war. With your help the Gatekeepers have gathered enough Mysterious Remnants to continue their research. They’ve tracked the Remnants back to Shavarath, the Plane of Battle. You need to travel there to recruit the help of the Archons in unravelling this mystery. The Archons, however, will only aid those who are worthy, and you find yourself embroiled not only in their tests, but in their eternal struggle with the Devils and the Demons. This adventure pack will include three new dungeons and a new raid, and as usual will be free to VIPs.

We've also been hearing your feedback that you'd like an improved experience when using the DDO Store, and we're happy to say that we'll be introducing a new store in the near future! We expect the updated DDO Store to offer a streamlined experience when making purchases and many other improvements. We're planning to start rolling out the new DDO Store to players later this summer. You will still be able to purchase Turbine Points with a credit/debit card, PayPal, and a wide selection of alternate payment methods. We'll have more to say about the DDO Store as we get closer to its launch.

We'll have more updates this year as well, of course. Players will be able to increase their character level to 30. We’ll have more adventure packs for you. We’ll have an Epic and extended version of our popular Shroud raid and a new adventure pack that relates to the Vale of Twilight. Players will be able to use an updated and epic version of Greensteel to craft more powerful gear. We are excited to bring this content to you!

Thank you for being a part of the Dungeons & Dragons Online community, and we love hearing your feedback. It's been a pleasure to talk to everyone here, and we hope to see you in-game for a long time to come.

Robert “Severlin” Ciccolini
A new server data center suggests ongoing dedication to DDO by Turbine.

Other efforts to reduce lag will also be appreciated.

The rest is included for completeness and indicates the Devs' plans for DDO for the rest of 2015.
Biggest "issue" with both DDO and LotRO is that datacenter in Boston and the games performance.
Huh, first glance I totally skimmed the datacentre part. I focused more on Shroud (and due to annoying guildie 'warlockwarlockwarlock').

Have to say...good news then
DDO buying new servers is not hardly and investment. What 20k to 30k in new hardware that is only half the salary of one of the dev's they laid off last year. they also removed DDO producers and kicked unemployment office last year.

Also Turbine isn't in control: Last Time i checked WB games Owns turbine unless you call customer service(that is another topic), and time warner owns WB games- Time Warner Answers to its shareholder's and do you really think they give a crap about DDO if it affects its share price.

The thing that stands out the most to me in that producer's letter is no new expansions plan were you have the option to purchase the expansion to generate revenue for the company. I'm sorry i was never impressed with the junk cut and paste updates taking old content and slapping lipstick on it.

The Thing that stands out to me is the fact they have no new expansion planned: Taking old or exsisting content and slapping. Even more offensive they are expanding shroud and forceing you to buy it with Turbine points.

Expanding shavarath! why that pack sucks and no one ever runs any of the quests.

Regardless of the cost of the new datacenter, it still represents a new investment in DDO and an expectation that it will be around long enough for that investment to pay off.

Since DDO has had exactly 2 expansions EVER, the fact that they either A) don't currently have one planned or B) aren't currently at the stage that they're revealing having one planned.. is kind of a useless indicator.

Expanding Shavarath is exactly the way to make it relevant again.

Also, the expansions weren't universally positively received. Thus it may very well be they'll never do another. But the lack of "expansions" is not identical to a lack of new content. Or did you overlook the "We'll have more updates this year as well, of course. Players will be able to increase their character level to 30. We’ll have more adventure packs for you. " MOST of DDO's increased content over the years has come in the form of additional adventure packs, not expansions.
I was really glad to see that DDO will be getting entirely new hardware and a better data center host. DDO should be around for quite awhile.
Has anyone ever suggested server merge for the ones in the same region/location? It's just a question, don't throw rocks...
Yea speculation on DDO forums was talking of merging some servers because of decline in the population back in jan 2015. Nothing set in stone as of yet.

I do not believe turbine has any plans to merge servers...Cordoovan mentioned that some time ago (a few months back at least)..that is definitely a players push idea
Several posters on the forums asked Producer Severlin directly about a possible server merger and he just ignored the question.
That's sad. I think that a server merge would surely fix the lack of players to form party at certain levels and quests.

Server merges are ugly though.

You can lose your name being one issue (one that actually made me quit swtor - after the huge buildup they had over legacy names and features and uniquess, after all the 'we NEED extra servers for the population'..even though it was only because of artificial capping queues to balance servers, and we warned them of initial surge... they went insane with merges and did an 'order of merging' which meant some servers were assured to lose out - even if they were original servers and preseeded by preorderers). This issue is not 'critical' overly.

A larger issue is if you play multiple servers. If you have 11 people on Wayfinder, and 11 people on Argo.. and they merge... will Turbine give you 11 more character slots? Will you have to buy 11 more character slots? When Ragnarok did that crap, they ended up making seperate accounts for each account... which mucked up things even more (although did allow you do triple login with yourself :D ).

With allowing people to be on multiple servers, and with character transfers allowed, don't really see a point... make a new char, or transfer your char. I will echo the sentiment of one poster though: be nice if Character Transfers went on sale. It's bring more attention to their existance, and honestly, is it really WORTH 25$ per character? At half price it'd likely still be profitable, and would make the community happier.

That said, be nice if they managed a method to allow cross-server play for raids at least...though can see that being buggered up readily. Plus, cross-server trading is always amusing, Knew one player who would farm up/buy out items on one server, get a transfer to another, and sell it off for profit, to reinvest and take back to the first server. Mind you that included RMT so...

Anyways, DDO has a precedence of merges, but that just might be making them leary of another? Wasn't really paying attention when the merge happened (was on break in another game, only learned of it when came back to wierd named chars)

Gods, if they merge how many hours would it take to find a free name for a new char?

Dunno. Watching server chat last night, was a request and LFM for a chain.
Two people were interested, but the difficulty would have broken bravery streaks so declined.
Some didn't consider the chain worth running.
Some just put their conversations on pause for a few minutes- afk? busy? waiting for awkward moment to pass?

Personally... I was a ♥♥♥♥♥: I was running that chain on multiple chars back to back but had no interest in 1-going slow, 2-healing (on the one char), and 3-fighting (another char sneaks it). It was 0300h and I just wanted it out of the way fast.

So there were people on, people that would have ran..just everyone was selfish that day.

For the record: karma smacked me one. Five runs and the item I wanted still didn't drop. -_-;;
