The basics of DDO have not changed significantly since this thread was active. A few new tweaks here and there. Nothing that impacts any of this significantly that I recall.
Welcome to DDO. Hope you love it!
While this is still true, the addition of new quests has made it so that the old recommendations for first adventure packs for F2P players to buy have new competition. Suffice it to say that any Free to Play person who doesn't want to find content drying up long before they reach L20 should invest the Turbine Points they earn from Favor from running quests carefully. Specifically, the first two purchases ought to be adventure packs in the L13-14 and L17-19 ranges. Otherwise, leveling through those ranges will be VERY difficult due to lack of available F2P content.
A bit more detail can be found in the thread "Level 5, now what?" here:

It's enough to drive a dragon nuts[www.royalblackwatch.net] ><
Serious complaint: they fixed some things stacking (thief tools) but other things like quivers need to be addressed for those who don't have magical unlimited returning ammo. Still, would like them to make larger gem stacks =P
OK.. umm.. why would you care? There's no reason to keep gems.
Or just try to use Slayer Arrows/Bolts and end up with 5 seperate quivers. Elemental would take up more. Really, an entire backpack space filled with quivers? Store and favour quivers at that.
Suppose you COULD just pay turbine, and roll an artificer, and stick to their conjured returning ammunition. Or just get House Deneith's 'mostly' returning ammunition. Slayer? Bane? BAH! who needs those.
Of course with existing stacks, unless you're running Alac Quivers from Abbott, can be exhausted in an hour *shrug* Sorting ammo in the quivers is also a pain...
So yeah, item stacks. There are still 'issues'.
As to 'no reason to keep gems', there really isn't a reason to have came to Korthos in the first place. I mean, other than the Doylist one. But then again, there IS a reason they call them MMOs... the RPG part is a forgotten past. But to answer your question: that character hoards. Gems, 'artifacts', goal is a skyship's hold filled with shinies.
Well, if that was the main thrust, the font size and color on the gem thing was seriously misleading. <grin>
True. Though the Deneith ones do last surprisingly well, if you're running an archer you really want the AA arrows and if you're running a crossbow user, the artificer ability to conjure.
It does seem to me that 10K stacks would fit game mechanics better. Either that or House D should offer 100% returning arrows.
As for using slayer arrows and other specific ones for specific targets, I've never really found a way to manage it that wasn't a pita.
I guess what I'm saying is... Yep, that's a valid complaint.
Once they get full, I spam the AH with all the projectiles for 10-11PP per stack.
I only have two complaints about the game.
1. This is the biggest complaint, since it effects everything. Gold farmers and item dupers continuously attempting to manipulate the auction houses.
The rule for auction houses is this. If there are a dozen identical items for roughly the same price, then that price is between 10 and 50 times too much for the item. Keep checking the item for new listings until you see one for 1/10 the price of the others.
A prime example is thieve's tools. 50 +5 thieve's tools are worth 1500 PP and no more. Yet there has been a gold farmer ( most likely a pack of them ) actively attempting to drive the price up to 20 +5 thieve's tools for 25,000 PP. This has been going on for over a year now.
This used to go for mithril armor until it was removed from the game. A suit of +5 mithril chain sold for 15,000 ( before Turbine changed the main currency from gold to platinum they sold for 15,000 gold. All items in game in the auction house just changed PP gor GP as if the two were the same currency, sobasically everything increased in cost tenfold in one day ) but several would be listed for 100,000 PP.
2. The 5 minute lag spikes which usually mean total party wipe because most people aren't experienced enough with them to know how to survive. I don't know how many times I've encountered one of those lag spikes and turned to just hold the run button the opposite direction until it catches up, only to have to go gather the soul stones of the rest of the party after killing whatever killed them.
Gold farmers are an issue in every MMO. At least it's been a long time since I've seen an actual ad in General or Trade or Advice chat trying to sell farmed gold.
Yep. Those are ugly. They don't come up all that often ime, but they're certainly a pita when they do.
People will always try to make money from gulible people. In WoW I found a vender who sold a recipe that most people did not run across. So I bout them for like 16 gold each, and then sold them on the AH for 400g each. I made a ton of money. So the "gold farmer" is most likely a real player who is just trying to maximize his profits by trying to cornor the market.
will usually share some platinum or items with new players. I have played ddo for years and still play, not as often as at first, but I still play.
