Half right. Akamai CAN be configured to use P2P connections, but much of its reliability and speed increase comes from the fact that Akamai themselves have a ton of dedicated distribution servers and the Netsession can and will pull from multiple of the closest of those for your download. Adding P2P takes some load off those servers, and as such I'm sure when it's enabled, the price to the content provider (Turbine in this case) is lower. Kudos to Turbine for not enabling that feature, even though it's undoubtedly costing them.
Yes, I'd prefer more options, from not using Akamai (possibly at additional cost) to being able to disable the Netsession client between updates with a simple option checkbox. Turbine definitely did us a disservice by saddling our computers with additional software we don't want or need (and some of us can ill-afford, if our computers are getting older) without our say-so. At the very least it's high-handed.
So I've heard.. evidence thus far (i.e. the ones I've tried) suggests that's just advertising, not truth. :) But that's just my experience and opinion, of course.
As many others said, find other games if you do not like it.
