i suggest you do try playing DDO, since it is free to play.
On the other hand, if you invest into the Pale Master tree and Eldritch Knight, you can be pretty tough. Either way, for the first few levels, throughout Korthos and BL, and even into the Harbour, choose the Eldritch Knight, and make sure you take the Masters Touch spell, and run around with a Great Axe. It might sound silly, but that's your best bet, and it's actually kick ass, until you're high enough to learn 3rd level spells. After which, just respec your Enhancements to your liking, and become the Wizard you envision.
some of it is just better to dive in and give it a go. just remember you're not a sorc and not to spend your sp like one. when your out then some trouble will happen. i would recommend finish korthos to get the archivist necklace.
"No, you are Not able to Solo some quests by yourself."
I beg to differ. Any quest where hirelings can be used to bypass forced group mechanics is soloable with a wizard. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that I was not able to solo with a Wizard, and not over-leveled either. Granted, a Sorcerer is generally easier, still not too difficult with a Wizard. In fact, one of my most OP melee builds was a Wiz12/Bard6/Rog2 a few years ago. Dunno if things have been nerfed since then. In fact I was able to solo entire raids with that guy.
When building your PC be sure to allocate 5+ pts in Spot, Serach and Disable Device.
Run cautiously the "Heyton Rest" quest on "casual" and get some lot behind the secret wall (as a rogue you can disarm traps, remember it) ; leave the quest immediately and sell all the stuff you found (except useful items for wizards) ; buy a hireling cleric (healer) and run Khortos quests until you earn enough XP to level up.
Remember to summon your healer at the beginning of each quest and buy another one when its time runs out.
Multiclass to wizard and spend all the points you have in the "Pale Master" tree --> Skeletal Knight : from now on, you'll own your personal bodyguard who will do all the "dirty job" for you, but always have a hireling-healer at hand.
Have fun :-)
P.S. even if you may dislike the rogue class, please consider the option to attain at least 2nd lvl in it (sooner or later...) : as a wizard your INT mod. will give you a good amount of SPs that you can use, for instance, to increase your Spot, Search and Disable Device skills ( you said you will play mostly solo, don't you?... some traps can make you feel very sad ) and, last but not least, you'll get "Evasion" feat for free.
Final note ( for experienced players ) : this procedure is intended to give novice wizards fair chanches of survival even on Hardcore Server.
Yes.
If you haven't played in a long time (or ever) is it going to be excruciatingly painful at first?
Also yes.
You can absolutely build a Wizard that can solo. But you're not likely to successfully manage it without some experience with the game, and the frustration of trying might eject you from the game before you gain the necessary skills.
Solo wizard requires both a careful build and a well-considered playstyle. While DDO doesn't use Vancian Magic (fire and forget spells), there IS a limit to your spellpoints, so tactics such as gathering groups of enemies to nuke with AoEs are important to learn, just for one example. And equally important in terms of minimizing spell point use is selecting SLAs (Spell-Like Abilities) from your enhancement trees. They inherently often cost fewer spellpoints than the same effect from a spell, but much more importantly, they can have metamagic feat effects to increase damage, decrease casting time, increase range, etc, at no additional spell point cost. That can be a lifesaver in terms of spell point use.
by leave dungeon you mean recall? ill see if i can find my character sheet to see
You can rerun quests as often as you wish, at the same or another difficulty. The only concern is that if you level too much, your friends may take a penalty on their XP for playing quests with you.
