You can find the feathers in any of the chests in the borderlands wilderness area.

it only takes an hour or three to get enough for a horse if you are way over level and have run speed increasing items, then run to each Rare encounter site in the wilderness area.

If you are at level or slightly over, then you are fighting your way to each chest as an adventure. You could just work the closest chests to the fort, then recall out, rest, redo, yeah it will take a lot longer.

It's one of those, 'sometimes you get lucky' and 'most times you don't'. Low percentage rate for a drop, keep at it, not only will you eventually get them, but you'll up your slayer count as well for the xp.

one thing to consider is more people means more pull chances. also sacking the scarecrow and hermit because they're close to entrance. learning where all the rares are helps too. the ddo wiki is helpful there.

There's a lovely optimized path that takes you past all but two of the rares (You can find it online, probably in the Wiki). Any rare chest in the Borderlands wilderness can drop a feather. My first horse took me way longer than I like to admit to collect all the feathers.

NOTE: Iirc, they drop on both Heroic and Epic. If you've had enough kills on Epic, switching to Heroic makes the whole thing go faster.

2 feathers per full run seems to be a nice average, from when I farmed my horse.
Look at the map from ddo wiki and do a full run, then reset and run again.

If you think you can farm anything really cool in a single lucky run, you must be new to MMORPGs :)

If you dont get it at a low level - Donw sweat it! i didnt get my horse until i was around level 14, and had some nice speed boosting items. Just put on some music, and run to some of the chests and reset for an hour. dont need to check every chest everytime you go in, what i usually do is run to the closest few chests, then recall and reset. Its a grind now but its a total blessing in the future! dont give up yet :D
