I never had issues with either launcher, but have been seeing people mentioning Steam one being... not exactly reliable.
Me too, I've downloaded all of these games over and over throughout the years and never had any problems.
If I had to guess it's on the Win 10 side of things as in one of my other older games our stock answer to 'will it play on Win 10' is 'some won't have any problems, some will have to make minor code changes, some will have to make major code changes and some will just be SOL'.
I also don't get when they go on about not being able to name a character. While I've seen the bug that pops up, it's the 'every name is taken' that get's me, especially when I've just created a new character on each server with at most having to take the 3rd name on my list of choices.
There are probably several reasons it’ll never happen. First and foremost the game is programmed for dl and installation by the ddo client so it would require some serious rewoking that might not even be possible. Second, it costs money, probably even cost them more for Steam to keep the game files on their servers. Third, legalities with their publisher or other companies who have been involved in the game in past years could come into play. Fourth, most of the playerbase doesn’t play through Steam.
It might get them more players and more money but then Steam would be taking a bigger cut. It’s probably really difficult to weigh the risk of that for such an old game and probably not a safe bet.
If you have played DDO in the past and had money invested in DDO on that old turbine account, then you need to contact SSG CS anyway to get it fixed.

- If your game client not running on Windows 10, try: Loading C++ 2005 and .Net Framework 1.1 from Microsoft website. They're no longer auto-installed by Windows Update on the latest Windows versions. Look in the DDO directory for the 3rdParty folder and run all the .exes you find there while the game is Not running and under Admin rights account.
- If you are having problems with first installing DDO from Steam, go to the DDO dot com website and download it there.
Download the DDO Installer here > http://www.ddo.com/en/game/download
- If your game client not running, Try: just uninstall, delete any leftover folders and then reinstall fresh. There is a file CleanUninstall.exe in the DDO folder, run that to uninstall.
- Try using DX 10 or DX 9 if you are having problems with DX 11. Might have to install DX 10, 9 and 11 on a new Windows 10 OS load.
- Make sure your Firewall and active defending anti-malware programs have DDO exe files in exceptions.
- Make sure your are loading the game and running game under account with admin rights.
- Many problems with the game stem from poor or faulty Network connection between your computer and the game servers near Boston, MA, USA. Read the sticky thread on the official forum, "Troubleshooting Connection Issues", "Understanding Lag" and "Game Connection Speed"
