Download time
The game took only about 10 minutes to download on Steam. I start the game and I make an account. Then the game says its downloading and its taking an eternity. Did this happen to everyone?

Yes that's how it works. It's been a common system for MMO's over the last 20 years. The first download was the client/launcher. It's an app that connects you to the game severs so you can download the game and play once it's downloaded. It's basically just a way to streamline the process for multiplayer games like this one that get patched and updated often and regularly because you can't play a game like this with other people if everyone doesn't have the same game version.

Unfortunately it's not linked to Steam, so Steam will not auto-update the game, DDO will only update when you run DDO's client. But there is an option in DDO's client to load when the computer starts up. I've never used that option though.

Yeah if you need the bandwidth for other things, then just have it download/update the game while you sleep. After these initial downloads are done though the future patches updates will take much less time.
