Isn't General Chat global already? And if it's Global Chat like I've seen on every other game I've ever played than I'd vote NO. 5% useful stuff / questions and 95% toxic junk.

***** later post: Thank's Dos, didn't know how the channels worked. Well in that case having the Advice channel Global would be very helpful, but if they do that one, they'd need a Global Chat too or you'd never see questions amongst all the BS on Global.

There does need to be something, Yriel hits it exactly right. I've always though Khyber was dead as I never see any chat on it, now I know it's just that they're not in my area.

General, Advice, and Trade are all based on the section of the city you're in along with any attached Wilderness areas...so Korthos can only read Korthos-related areas; the Harbor can only read the Harbor, the Waterworks, Cerulean Hills, and I believe Ataraxia's Haven; the Marketplace gets the Marketplace, Searing Heights, and I would assume the Subterrane as well...

Either way, I personally don't see many people talking in public chat anyway, but again, my mileage varies.
i would love to see chat become global because if no one is really in the area its hard to ask a question
Indifferent. If it becomes toxic stupidity, you turn it off if you are not into that. If it remains useful, leave it on. I would turn it off on day 1.

Guild chat, party chat, and player created chat channels are already global. I see no need for the devs to create or make a general or trade chat that is global. I think it would create more problems than benefits, but I wouldn't say I'm against it. I do think it should be a different channel though rather than being added to a current one.

Anyway, yeah you can create one and just tell everyone the name of it and there you go, global chat for your server.

Something more widespread so new players don't jump into Korthos, see no chat for an hour or two, decide the game is dead and quit would probably be a good idea, though it would likely need some moderation.
Definitely a new chat channel rather than one of the current ones though, yes.

yeah i agree there should be all global chat channels. No reason to not have it now.

They have one on Argonnessen, but it kicks me off it periodically and it usually only has about a dozen or two players signed in unless there's an event going. (It's really nice to be able to get notice that Crystal Cove has opened while you're off rebuffing on your guild ship.)

Yes, a global chat would be nice. And it should definitely be a new channel. The problem is, what should it contain?

Sometimes I think the Advice channel ought to lump together Korthos, the Harbor and the Marketplace into a single 'location' for newbie help.

In contrast, Trade should be universal.. except it shouldn't include Korthos (or Korthos should have its own Trade channel).

Well the first thought that comes to my mind is that new players are on the snowy side of Korthos and someone over in the Harbor / Marketplace if they went back would be on the sunny side and they couldn't meet.
There's also that the people in say, the Marketplace will most likely be talking about things that might confuse new players, since I imagine some of the stuff we think of as simple might be a little overwhelming to someone starting to play this because a friend IRL does and they think it sounds fun. :D:

It all sounds nice. It just also seems like an ideal that is unnecessary, hard to achieve, and I don't put much faith in to be achieved in any game (so nothing against the DDO devs). But you guys hit it on the nose. Any solution needs to know the answer to what it should contain and why. So a list would be needed.

Some things that come to my mind which I think need to be considered are:

-gold spammers (yes I've seen them recently).
-too many people using trade chat at once pushes posts up faster than anyone can make use of.
-how global trade chat will affect the auction house.
-global trade chat could perhaps have the unintended effect of making the world seem more empty. Right now players who aren't participating in an event but want to trade event items will go to the area the event is in. That will stop with a global trade chat. Other traders who tend to go to the Marketplace or Eveningstar, would no longer need to.
-Guild invite spammers will hit new players as soon as they can, if they can spot them in global chats, well that's bad imo.
-Someone has to moderate all the chats...so it costs money. Adding global chats will create more work for someone...whether that's good or bad for them idk.

I do think it would be good (but unnecessary) for new players to be able to access advice from those outside of Korthos in-game. But I'm not convinced that global chat is the best answer.

Not that it would be any easier; nor that I've thought it through enough, but perhaps a different solution would work better--like adding a new social window where experienced players can check a box to be available to help new players, and from that same window new players can request help.

I think global chats are really difficult to do in a way that doesn't have negative consequences. I'd also prefer improvements on other aspects of the game if it is a question of that for the devs.

Improving hireling AI's to actually follow stand ground like they used to, among other things, would help new/all players; as would more visible indications for what damage type kills them.
I agree with wTp.Soap.

Too many bad posts in a chat can drive the good people away. I've seen the chat in Star Wars: The Old Republic hit a chain reaction of terrible posts as has Star Trek Online. If the posts are moving slowly, the risk of chat burnout is low. If the posts are rapid, the frequency of burnout inducing posts increases. Once good people are too burnt to bother with the chat, the bad people and unfortunate new players are the people left on it.

If that means keeping the chat segmented and slow, fine. I'd rather an awkward chat system than dealing with harassing or spamming posts every few seconds.

Not sure which why, so I'll answer all three.

Trade should be universal so you don't have to hop from place to place to post the same thing. And when you do, someone may well respond in Trade rather than in PM like you asked. And it should be universal so everyone has the opportunity to see what's being offered or requested.

It shouldn't include Korthos both because newbies aren't likely to have anything useful to trade (either to offer or in response to an offer). And also because the sunny/snowy Korthos thing is sufficiently confusing without adding specific attempts for people to meet across that barrier.

And Korthos should have its own.. I'm less sure of this, which is why it was parenthesized. Might be nice if people in Korthos could trade with one another. But equally, it might be better not to spring that complexity in the game on them until they reach the Harbor.
