am I missing something?
I'm new to game, well haven't even started just yet, but from what I read, DDO uses the D&D 3e rules, so am I missing it, or did the completely axe one of the Ranger's core abilities from the tabletop... 'Animal Companion'

Yeah, maybe but there is some spells that rangers get to call animals. And there is abilities to hypnotise animals and charm them. So i guess that takes the place of . 'Animal Companion'. Since DDO is more a combat oriented game the ranger has more emphasis put on melee and ranged combat skills.

well at the time when ranger was made i don't think the tech was there. once artificer and druid came people have been asking for it.

If this is going to be a sticking point for you, you'll find others. DDO is loosely based on D&D, but a lot of liberties have been taken to make the game work as an MMO.

Ranger companion would be nice to have

Actually, not so much. Currently summons and pets just don't survive well at higher difficulties and/or levels.

BTW, the term 'companion' in DDO is specifically used for cosmetic critters that follow you around but do nothing except a few tricks. Careful of your terminology, lest you confuse.
