Bard class is free, they are a combination of spell caster and light armor melee class.
If your networking speed is bad, you might as well NOT try to play DDO, which is a online MMORPG.

Ah! Thanks~ Too bad Tieflings aren't available.
I go to internet cafes to play online, appreciate the concern tho :)
Ignore the subtle trolls.
DDO is a MMORPG indeed, but while there's a vast amount of playable online content, this game can be played mostly as a solo adventure, albeit a little slower at times.
The whole party thing doesn't generally happen much and it's not a bad thing, and does not inhibit your gameplay experience, the only time it may become necessary to have a more moderate connection would be if you were aiming to play a support character.
This being said, I'm on one of the highest broadband connection speeds available in the UK, so I don't tend to get any issues with that, however 12 years of DDO can confirm that the game is just as enjoyable as a 50/50 solo game. Hope you enjoy!
I live in rural Ecuador with a 2Mbps microwave internet connection and I have no trouble at all playing DDO. I get no more lag than anyone else, even in raids.
That being said, the initial game download itself takes FOREVER. :)
For what it's worth, I play DDO solo & did quite awhile as a free player, but I am a VIP now and own all the expansions except the newest one Ravenloft, just released... DDO is **totally** worth being a paid member as you get access to pretty much EVERYTHING except the paid expansions themselves.
