Tried all compatability modes, ran as admin from both within and without. Switched audio devices. Validated cache, reinstalled. Still same error.

I hit this too. Turns out this app holds the distinction of being the first program I've ever had to opt out of DEP.

First you'll need to get the full path to the game exe. Right click on the game in your library, select Properties, then go to the Local Files tab and click on Browse Local Files. That will open an explorer window where the game files live, which you'll need for the next steps:

1) Go to Control Panel -> System
2) Click on Advanced System Settings (on the left)
3) Click the Settings button under the Performance section
4) Go to the Data Execution Prevention tab
5) Click the Add button
6) Navigate to "To the Moon.exe" and select it
7) You should see "RGSS Player" in the list with a check mark next to it
8) Click OK and now the game should launch

Got the same problem...

Yes... and for me the DEP opt out also didn't work. I've also tried disabling DEP for all non microsoft services but that didn't help as well.

I go to DEP settings and both options are grayed out. It says something about starting it by bcdedit.exe

Hmm, the DEP thing is definitely the most common issue; but if that doesn't work, there are some other potential solutions on the 2nd post of this thread here: http://freebirdgames.com/forum/index.php?topic=3348.0

If you're using Win8, this thread might also help:

Go to My Conputer and get into the Drive that holds your steam games.
It's usually C:/Programs or Programs (x86)/Steam/Steamapps/common/To The Moon

Find the file named something like Tothemoon.EXE . Rightclick and try running as an admin.

I've heard the recent Windows 8.1 update has been troublesome for some folks; not sure if this is part of the issues caused by that, though.

How did you guys navigate to the To the Moon.exe file? I can't seem to find it.
KittenLOVER3000 Jan 6, 2014 @ 11:23am
It would be where you installed it. So whatever hard drive (C:\, D:\, etc...) , then if on your root OS drive, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common. This is the default location for all steam games.
