Saints Row IV crashing during co-op
So me and a friend recently got Saint's Row IV on steam, and whenever we try to play co-op, I crash. He's fine, whether joining me or I join him, but when I join him, I crash right when I get in, and when he joins me, unless we are playing the tutorial level, I crash. I can play the single player fine, and so can he. Any suggestions?

Edit: Now it happens whenever I play, not just multiplayer- I crash to desktop, and Saint's Row IV restarts itself, popping up with the box that says "preparing to launch Saints Row IV" and then restarting the game.

Edit #2: Restarting doesn't help, I'm still crashing and restarting.

The game is very buggy. I get crashes on two different computers as well, usually 5-10 per day when I play. It can be 10 mins or two hours between crashes.

Worse still, there are even repeatable crashes if you try and get into one of those chrome void craft that is parked atop one of the climbing towers leads to an instant crash.

And yeah, the restart on crash is even more annoying. Yet another buggy game that never got fixed. Disappointing since this engine has been around for some time to fix these issues.

Is it the display driver thats crashing? When you go into your event log what does it say?

All that happens is the game kills itself, as though I did alt-f4, then restarts the game. Nothing graphical crashes I don't think

Disable steam overlay. Crashing in coop stopped after we did this for the most part.

If you still crash update your drivers.

The way it sounds it is very likely a display driver. It would just go to black screen, you would still hear ♥♥♥♥ happening in the back ground, and then it would go to your desktop and steam would start it up again. I have the same problem and i didnt think it was a display driver till I looked in my event log.

I don't get a black screen, but instead just the game quits. No noise, no anything, just it crashing. Thanks for the idea though

It went well for probably 2-3 minutes and then it killed itself. I think your suggestion helped though, thanks

np - not the first time or the only game that has trouble with the overlay

besides of that - certain events and mission parts have a problem in coop

Yeah, but now the game wont even work in single player, which really sucks :/

Disabling overlay doesn't work and drivers are up to date. It's the game that is buggy. Crashes single or coop. Seems to happen a lot with physics (abduction gun) or a lot of other things going on.

Disabling overlay does work - play now without crashing. I even use custom shaders and a handful changes to the game i made myself including vfx re-writes.

Anyway.

Do you have mods installed ? or is this a vanilla game ?

Maybe it works for you, but it doesn't for either of the two computers that I tried.

No mods, vanilla game, and have done all the typical things like verifying files etc. I also noticed it's late game with most of the lockups. Not much in the early stages.

If you use nvidia - you can disable multi-threading on the graphicsboard in the control panel - it works on some games - which simply seem to have a problem with it - you can try

The mission bugs however, are not graphic related and seem to come from the added dlcs

Vanilla game, I'm literally just at the beggining of entering the virtual city place (not the one where you use a rocket launcher) and it crashes too many times to play, really. I'm using an AMD card.

I see - crashed there too in coop with a friend twice. Played solo and it worked. I although switched off all graphic options just to get past ( and to be save ).

You will run into more problems when you try to return to the "real-world" and you can crash in stores as well sometimes ( nothing new - you crashed in SR3 there as well ). Used minimal settings possible just to get past and turned ultra setting back on after.

Never crashed in the city itself (only with steam overlay on).

Don´t know what exactly the problem is there. Looks like a streaming bug to me or memory address error.

Save often manually - to have a save game to fall back too. ( just advice )
