Ye wot?
Story is just as much of a gumbo. This is the first SR game I've played, and I've been told the earlier ones are just about being part of a street gang, and that it started out as more or less a GTA clone, and has gotten increasingly wacky and parodying as it goes on. This one goes all out with the crazyness. Your street gang has become some kind of massive pop group/PMC/social club hybrid, you've been elected the first gangsta presedent of the US, and then aliens invade (all this in just the tutorial missions). The bulk of the game is basically a ♥♥♥♥♥-out riff on The Matrix movies, with lots of other little nods and parodies along the way (there are whiffs of Mass Effect in the parts where you wander around your ship in the "real world" and talk to your crew, for example).
I haven't finished it yet myself, but so far I do recommend it. It's a riot, and it's one of those rare parodies that's both a good parody, and a good straight example at the same time (think Wright/Penn instead of Selzer/Freidberg). My only major complaint is that the main city simulation map gets to feeling a bit samey after a while, mosly I think because of the everpresent red lighting (like how in The Matrix movies, the scenes in the matrix have a green bias, this does the same only with red), and the fact that there's apparently no day/night cycle.
Saints Row:
you start as a normal person that gets beaten by a bunch of people, then the saints recruit you, you become one of the main people in the gang, then Julius (the former Saints leader) betrays the saints;
Saints Row 2:
You start as again another person, but you and Gat remake the gang, with you being the leader, and you fight other gangs. Some weird stuff that I don't remember happens between the Saints and Ultor Corporation, and I don't remember the ending;
Saints Row: the Third:
You start by robbing a bank, owned by the Syndicate, then they take you, Gat, Shaundi and (maybe?) Pierce on a plane to threaten you, but you escape, even though Gat dies there (not really). Then you begin a quest again the Syndicate, its followers and a military thing, the Stag, that wants to destroy all the gangs. It ends with you either killing the main antagonist or you saving Shaundi and Pierce from... well, death;
Saints Row IV:
You begin the game as the U.S. president, then aliens attack, then they kidnap you, then they take you into a virtual world, then you get superpowers, then you find a way to get out, then they destroy Earth, then you get revenge, then... done.
