If you've played the Gladiator Begins/Colosseum games...
... And you were a big fan of the hardcore loot/skill system, then this game is for you. I was waiting for someone to make some decent comparisons to the old games but it would seem nobody here is actually playing it, just trashing it. So I took the plunge and bought it. I was a HUGE fan of the Gladiator begins game on PSP as well as Colosseum road to Freedom for PS2. This game is EXACTLY that, just without the roman style coat of paint.

It has all the exact same stuff with even more. You can expect the same type of item combination upgrading, skill leveling and a new magic system to boot. All this game did was gut out all of the needless between mission stuff. Simply upgrade equips, allocate skills and start killing again. It's that simple. It is really fun.

Let me say it again, just buy it if you were on the fence about it being similar to those games.

First of all, kudos to you for taking a chance with this one. It's always refreshing to see an honest opinion from someone who's at least tried a game, as opposed to reading some snide, keyboard-jockey's relay from the ol' hater's bandwagon =P

To be honest, I dismissed this game due mostly to the trailer. The narrator (or whatever he is) just grated on my nerves way too much, and the onscreen text looked as if it were cut n' paste from MS Paint or something. The whole thing just smacked of poor quality.

However, after reading your post and noting the reference to the legendary Colosseum: Road to Freedom, I may just pick this one up...later down the track when I can pry myself away from Dark Souls =P

Thanks for the heads-up!

does it have controller support?

I say this because although I enjoy the old road to freedom game, I am not going to play this with a mouse and keyboard...

nevermind seems it does have controller support

Yo it does indeed have controller support my friend. It would definitely be better on a controller but, turns out, the default Keyboard scheme is actually pretty friendly after you warm up to it.

And Lord_Templar, if you do purchase I'm always down to play. The best part about this game compared to the old games... it has coop multiplayer! So far I've put about 5 hours into it and It has that exact same addictive grind. Look no further if you crave such a game!
I LOVED GB. This is NOT GB. Not in balance, design, or charm. Especially not charm. There are no characters in this game. There's a lot of refinement to the loot grind and a few decent shifts to the combat but, hey, I can get mindless loot grind and mediocre combat ANYWHERE.

I want to love this game but it is not happening.
I've played the two previous games as well as reviewed them on our website @ http://www.popcultureshock.com/gladiator-begins-review/55461 . I like this game, but I have to admit that it seems that some of the initial character customization has taken a serious step backwards. The core gameplay and skill building is still there though. But the game lacks personality and a decent storyline or goal. As someone earlier said, the charm is missing from Gladiaor Begins and Colosseum. It feels very barebones. And my biggest gripe is the removal of locational damge from the game. Previous games had head, arms, torso, and legs damage icons. Now there's just a general health bar. No more disabling body parts? I've been a big fan of this series from the first time I played Cololsseum on PS2. It prompted me to import the Japanese version, Gladiator: Road to Freedom Remix, which was released months later with new items, blood, and dismemberment. Games like this are rare. So I was very pleased when I saw this game and instantly know what it was from the screenshots. This game isn't perfect, it isn't for everyone, but it is for me and the few friends I have to like this game.

This is exactly right. Well put.
Is there anyway to try this game? Its pretty rough asking around 40 bucks for a game that has so many mixed reviews
Well I don't think there is... you could always find the PSP or PS2 version.

Yes, I would recommend you look up the PSP version which can be downloaded from the PS Store to the PSP. The PS2 game is very rare (though I still have mine).

This is a video of the gameplay from the PS2 remix version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGjY6tABfGM&feature=related

I respect your opinion, but this game is awful.
