Do you need to play the original games before this?
I played the original games but can't remember the plot - does anyone know if you can jump into this without spoiling any plot, or is it better to revisit the originals and then this?

This game starts right after the end of Le Chucks revenge. So Id Play that with a walk through just to take the edge off as its hard and long lol

I still remember how Monkey Island 2 finished despite not having played it for decades.

"Hip bone's connected to the thigh bone ..."

Yes. Monkey Island 1 & 2 at least.
This one is going to be the (un-)official part 3 of the franchise

Oh, you mean the riddle affecting the three skeletons? I got totally lost in that.

According to the devs, they made this game so that even people new to this ip could play it, and even specifically went out of their way to both test the game with people who didn't know the MI IP, and hired devs who did not know or did only know little about the IP, to get fresh eyes on the game. So you should be fine to play the game without prior knowledge.
However. (and this is only my personal opinion/an educated guess) there still will be tons of stuff you probably can only appreciate fully, if you know at least "The Secret of Monkey Island" and "Monkey Island 2: LeChucks Revenge". However there are most likely also tie ins to the other games, but as has been said before, this game is a direct continuation of MI2.

It might not be necessary to understand the game but you will lose out on all the references. Also if you are interested in this game, why wouldn't you want to play the others first? It's more of the same, after all.

if you don't want to spend a bunch of time replaying the old ones right before this, you could always watch a longplay of them on youtube or something for a quick refresher.

I'd much rather play the games but understand it can be a little bit of a time sink.

having just started the game: there is a scrapbook that you can flip through and examine the plot of the older games, so you should be fine with no experience

probably will be some in-jokes that you will miss tho
