Is this game worth it?
I've played Monkey Island series since I was a kid. Original MI1, MI2, and Curse were all great. I continue to introduce these three to my kids and they love it. Escape is when the interface turned upside down and I was not a fan. Purchased Tales of Monkey Island to give the series another shot. The mechanics of Tales were too simplified that did not allow a player to figure out the right combo of "talk to, push, pull etc." Was not a fan of tales.

Now this one comes out. Reading reviews if I am understanding correctly, it takes away the multiple controls/push pull etc. and does not seem as immersive. Before investing in another knock off Monkey Island saga, I'm wondering is this more like Tales or like the original MI1, MI2 & Curse?

If it is more like Tales, then it is not for me. If it stays faithful to original first 3 MI games then yes. The remastered MI1 & MI2 were great. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Mechanics to me are very similar to those of Monkey Island 3 - Graphics are different but the story is just great, i would recommend this game as a hard core fan of MI 3

I only played Tales for half an hour, because I found it boring.

I'm on my third playthrough of Return by now.

Maybe that gives you an idea. ;)

Controls are different, but to me this is a true Monkey Island game deserving the name. I love it.

I'd say it acknowledges all MI games, but plays more like MI1 and 2 than the others, minus the verbs and sword duels and plus a number of little conveniences. It certainly is worth the price point in my opinion, I'm still finding or hearing about optional funny stuff that shows a certain love for the material.

Its not worth it.

Can this game allow you to make dialogue mistakes? An example is in Curse you have singing pirates and can screw it up with the wrong response.

Also does the interface have as many actions as MI1 & MI2? I hated Tales simplified actions.

Also in MI1 & MI2, you had puzzles that required a good amount of thinking and focus. Tales were basically just logic point and click. Are puzzles in this one as immersive as MI1 & MI2?

Interface does not have all the pull, push, talk, grab, etc etc etc. Interface is more straight forward, things can be left clicked or right clicked, things can also be combined - hence why i think this mechanics are more like monkey island 3 -

If you're a fan of the series, it's definitely worth it. And you can always refund before two hours if you turn out not to like it, so nothing to lose.

It's a lot closer to the originals than Tales, don't worry. After all it's made by the same people. You're in good hands.

The actions that get performed when clicking on something are context sensitive though. No choice of verbs here.

Thank you. So more like the circle in Curse. Sounds better than the Tales.

It took me 22.5 hours to finish up the game without looking anything up or using the hint little handbook that you are given on the game - to me those were fairly solid and fun hours of gameplay - I've been replaying Monkey island right before this one so maybe i got some mechanics fresh on my head and make the game a little faster.

I would say that i do recommend this game, i thought it had that monkey island vibe that i've missed for so long

The original is the first 3 but the first 2 as The creator Ron Gilbert left after 2.
And if it's worth playing it is up to you.
If you are not mad about the artstyle and things like Murray being appearing while he wasn't in the original and this takes place after 2s ending then you have no problem.
If on the other hand you must have the pixel art, Roland MT-32 music and not have any mention or appearance of anything from Curse or onward then you should refrain from it.
Overall it's the game you know and love with a fresh coat of paint.

I love Murray lol

Yeah that's probably why he was brought in even tho he is "non-canon" for the die hard fans who see this game as Monkey Island 3a.
Yet it isn't.
Ron Gilberts original take is lost to time, he stated it himself, and this is as close it it as he could make it.
Some people disliked the change from the original some embrasse it.
The game itself acknowledges the past games too.

Why does everybody keep saying this game takes place after two? It doesn't. Murray being in the game makes perfect sense.
PirateSpongeBob Sep 25, 2022 @ 3:44pm
Murray the demonic skull, I mean I'll use my arm to pet kittens, is a great character. This game sounds like more of the original lore of the first two games are there. So I am leaning to purchase it and give it a try.

The one thing I wanted to avoid was a Tales repeat. I admit, I was not fan of Tales of Monkey Island. Thank you all for your responses and they have been extremely helpful. Thanks
