Sort of hack storytelling, in any case.
First off because that is clearly what I was implying, secondly because that is what the ending outright states.
Personally I think more stories should end that way. I think the Lord of the Rings should have ended with Frodo finally getting to Mount Doom and discovering its a cardboard cut out with J.R. Tolkien's name stencilled on it in large letters at the bottom. Cut to credits.
Honestly though, I'm not sure the world is ready for that level of depth and cleverness in storytelling.
Yes, clearly Tolkien is a hack compared to the incredible depth of story and theme that Gilbert gave us. :D
lol according to that one person's logic, ALL works of fiction should have a meta ending because none of it was real in the first place.
