Sadly economy is retarded though.
1) The normal servers, these are often called the "Live" servers. These are the ones the game has always had. There are many to choose from and all have the same rules. One of them is for European players but the rules are the same, and all the others are based in the USA. All the servers have varied populations, so if you prefer to play alone, you might like a low population one. If you want to group with people, a high population one would be better. But because these servers are so old, there are very few people to group with in the lower levels anyway. There are cities where people hang out, but besides that, I didn't see another person hunting until I had played about 3 months and was already level 63. I like soloing so I didn't care, but for a new player this might be a problem unless you like the challenge of figuring stuff out yourself and googling many questions. There are 110 levels total, and the last 10 levels have a lot of players and a lot of groups happening. The plus side of these top heavy servers is that you get more than 20 expansions for free, spanning almost 20 years. The amount of content is enormous... There are hundreds of areas to hunt in and explore, over 10,000 quests, massive amounts of items and spells etc. The game is huge, and most of it is free to play.
2) Firiona Vie. This is actually mostly a "normal" server like the other Live servers, but this is the only one with different rules. The rules are basically that experience is faster, and loot and money is easier to come by. It is a more casual server basically. It was originally supposed to be a "roleplaying" server but hardly anyone does that. A lot of people play here though because it is easier and more casual and has quite a lot of players. Personally I don't like it though because it is too easy and inflated money/gear removes a lot of the fun of the game for me. But it depends on your opinion.
3) "Test". This is the server that they test new patches and ideas on before putting it on all the other servers. So things can go wrong here sometimes, but not often. They let anyone play on this because they are happy for any feedback, and a lot of people play on only this server as their main home. One of the main reasons is that all the bonuses you get on the other servers by paying a subscription, is free on the Test server. So it makes the game a lot easier because you get the best mercenaries, exp boost abilities, and various other stuff, all for free. Again though, I prefer to play the legit version of EQ because it is more fun for me. The game used to be difficult and super challenging, and they changed so much over the years to make it a lot easier and a lot more casual. So I at least like to play the normal servers where some of that challenge still exists. And if I ever feel like I need a bit of an easy ride for a while, I can just pay for 1 month's subscription.
4) The "Progression" servers. These servers require a subscription to play on, and they have different rules to all the other servers. Most of them are new servers and the expansions unlock gradually, so these are the busiest servers at the moment because people have waited a long time to play the old areas with other people again. There are many downsides to these servers too though: The old content isn't really the same as it used to be because so much has changed and things are easier now. Also there are a lot of trollish players and people are desperate to be TEH MOST BADAZZ!! so everyone is racing each other and stealing everything they can to elbow everyone out of the way and rush through the game. Some people like this but if you just want to casually enjoy the game, you will likely get left behind and inconvenienced by people who see themselves as more important than you. That said, you will probably be able to find at least one friendly guild with more chilled people that will go at a reasonable pace and may be willing to help teach you things and play together. Just bear in mind, it isn't a sure thing because these servers are mostly pretty intense.
