People are starting to look at Unleashed in a different light because people now have better ways to play it. Keep in mind a lot of people played it on the PS3, which had a whole slew of frame drops, long loading screens, and other issues. Now with emulation and the backwards compatibility (xbox series S and whatnot if memory serves) people are gaining a better appreciation for it.
People's mentality on Sonic 06 is also changing because of the port that was (and I believe still is) being worked on by ChaosX. It's actually surprisingly good.
Not bad, but definitely middle of the road for boost sonic.
At least Frontiers had a much better 2D/3D ratio than the more recent games.
I thought Colors was bad back in 2010 though. My opinion has never changed, so I can only speculate.
Sonic fans seems to have an aversion towards 2D it's strange.
It's the same reason why people don't like Sonic Forces being full of 2D sections and an entire 2D play style when they wanted a 3D platformer, yet nobody minds it at all when Mania was entirely 2D; the game was made for those that wanted a 2D game like the original Mega Drive trilogy, and they got exactly that. That's one of the main reasons why Mania was praised and Forces wasn't - Mania understood its audience, whereas Forces did not.
Instead of having cheesy dialogue like other entries, it was pure cringe. I can't imagine anyone laughing out loud at the dialogue.
I agree, it’s mainly because it’s bad, perhaps rushed remaster. You’d have better time playing Wii version on Dolphin than this broken mess of a game. It’s not the worst game ever, however it’s meant to be best version of Colours hence why it’s called Ultimate and yet original still outshines it(unfortunately).
Maybe the problem is that Sega never make a full 100% 3D Sonic game. Sega does 2D 100%, but when it comes to 100% 3D that is a huge no.
Sonic Unleashed = 3D + 2D
Sonic Colors DS = 2D
Sonic Colors console = 3D + 2D
Sonic Generations 3DS = 2D
Sonic Generations console = 3D + 2D
Sonic Mania = 2D
Sonic Forces = 3D + 2D
Sonic Frontiers = 3D + 2D
Sonic 4 Episode 1 & 2 = 2D
See the huge difference? 2D can be 100% 2D, but 3D isn't allowed to be 100% 3D.
Much more so the remaster, but it's still both.
If anything, I feel like how terrible Ultimate is as a remaster has sort of protected Colors from being reevaluated by players, since someone might have less fun replaying the game through Ultimate than they remember having 12 years ago with the original, and attribute that to the miserable remaster, even in cases where the original game being thoroughly mediocre is actually to blame.
So like, instead of "huh, this isn't as good as I remember. ...maybe Sonic Colors isn't actually that good" the reaction is "huh, this isn't as good as I remember. must be the remaster."
Ehhh, I dunno... while technically true, it feels very wrong for Sonic Frontiers to be something like 95% 3D, and Sonic Colors to be something like 10% 3D (that 3D being almost entirely linear hallways), and for them both to be described as "3D + 2D" as if they are equal in any way in this regard.
The problem with Color's 2D segments is that they rely too much on 1 gimmick (hit button for lasers to slowly spin, dodge the same ball that shoots clockwise in 8 directions, etc) and the stages don't last long enough for those gimmicks to be used in interesting ways.
Granted, this is the result of Sonic Team deciding to ditch the original plan of each world being 2 acts + boss (remants of which can still be found in the game files alongside obvious spots in stages where 2 acts used to meet and be stitched together) with some small side missions but that just makes the problem even more evident. These weren't supposed to take the place of a full level.
