Do I have to play DD1 first to enjoy the game thoroughly?
Do we know enough about this game and its story to say that whether or not you HAVE to play DD1 to understand the story completely?
Or can I just pick this game up and enjoy it while not being utterly confused about whats going on etc?

Not at all, i would still recommend playing the first game though.

Ive never beat the first game, cuz its way too easy even on hard. But it is a really good game, I just kinda got bored due to it being fairly easy.
Story wasnt much to write home about thou. The only thing youd miss out on really is the lore of the world which is solid. You could just watch a youtube video for this. You likely wont be able to beat the first game in 4 days (if you do all or most content), I am unemployed atm and I doubt playing 12+ hours a day, id be able to beat dragons dogma 1 lmao.

Id just say play 2. They know most people will not have played the first game, so likely theyre making it more of a blank slate type of deal.

The games are not directly connected... no shared characters or land. They share a similar base story concept, and they share a universal mythology. Playing DD1 may give you insight into that mythology and the philosophy behind it, but I expect that to also be explained and explored in DD2 as it's core to the game's story.

If it's taking DD1's Lore into consideration, the world is cyclical. DD2 will likely be fundamentally the same overarching goal as the first game, with the meat being fleshed out in the world of quests along the way.

The opening of the first game tells you basically that countless Arisen have walked the path you're about to walk. You play as one for a few minutes before making your character.

The lore of Dragon's Dogma reminds me a lot of Dark Souls, how everything is a cycle.

In DD2, we'll see if we can do something about that.

At this point, it's probably better to just play DD2 and only play the first one if you just cant get enough of the series
It's probably much better if you don't, actually.

You can, but you don't have to. Just know that Returning Veterans from Dragons Dogma 1 are expecting VERY different plot things in Dragon's Dogma 2 than New Players to Dragons Dogma are.

I would say no... from what I've learned so far from their YT content, it seems to be the same world you are exploring as the first game, only obviously brought to modern day standards and visuals, and also apparently expanded to some degree.

So if you haven't played the first one, you'd kinda have the bonus of going into the world completely fresh, while at the same time, as a DD1 vet, you'd have the possible bonus of nostalgia and re-visiting places that where important or otherwise stuck with you in the first game.

Story-wise though, nah, I don't think the games are really interdependent, think of DD2 as being a different Arisen in the more or less same world at some time after the stuff that happened in DD1.

No like others have stated. It will have a similar core story of a cyclical world but the story with be completely separate. The universe of dragon's dogma is like the legend of zelda as each game is a standalone but has minor/major plot connections (in zelda the main characters are constantly reborn in a fashion to have the same core traits but are completely different people that have a unique story to themselves). So while this is a sequel it is not a sequel at the same time (confusing I know).

That said a lot of the mechanics from the leaks seem to be quite similar so if you do decide to play the first it will help you understand how the universe works and give you a feel of the core gameplay loop. I recommend it because it is a good game even though the story is meh. I know that does not sound like a good reason of why you should play but keep in mind just how many people despite it's poor initial sales have praised the game, there is a reason for why people recommended it and wanted a sequel to a game that came out twelve years ago.

It is honestly a contradiction game as if you decide not to try the first game you will not miss out on anything, but if you play the game and LIKE it you will feel like you needed to play it.

Thanks for the replies people :) Helped alot
As mentioned not really, but the game is awesome too. The story will be separate though.
I hope you get to play both eventually. Enjoy DD 2 if you getting it!

you never HAVE to play the predecessor to a game. But in this case I would always recommend it, its on Sale so really cheap and given how Unique of a game it is with its Unique systems, trying the 1st will give a general Idea of how the 2nd will be and if you enjoy the generalistics of the game or not

Probably should watch a lore video on youtube. I watched one earlier as a refresher, it was good and inly like 8 minutes long. Covers everything about Arisen, The Dragon and The Seneschal. The second game seems to assume you already know about them…though it will likely give you a primer on it.
