Do I need to play the first to play the second?
I think the first one is very dated, this second game is a direct continuation or another universe, not needing the first to understand the second.

I doubt you need to, but you should because it usually goes on a massive sale and is a great game that still holds up.

I don't see how anyone can answer that yet.

From showcase, they are saying that DD2 is taking place in an alternate reality of the first one. It's possible there will be tie ins of some sort but we can't know that as the game hasn't released yet.

If I had to give advice, I would say play DD1 and wait to play DD2. Let the guinea pigs take the hit. If it's "meh", wait for it to go on sale.

You don't see many games like DD1. Some people are turned off by DD1 because the game is only a fraction of what it was supposed to be, but the combat and exploration are still solid. DD1 has tons of hidden aspects to it and you can play for hundreds of hours and still be discovering new things.

Highly unlikely you need to play the first one. Simply put, the nature of the story is literally universe-encompassing, and completing. So the second game is pretty just going to be going through similar motions, and otherwise be totally unrelated, because there's nothing else it can be.

As for the implied question of "is this a sequel or a prequel" the answer is: Yes

I'm replaying the original as we speak. It has aged pretty well IMO. Everything for the most part feels very well tuned. If you are used to playing games like dark souls however, where you can essentially stat yourself into any kind of build you may find the vocation system to be limiting. BUT that is making a return in DD2 so it is what it is.

Do you need to play the first one? No, but should you? Yes.

Do not get over hyped, you will be met with disappointment, take the game as it is, no other game is like it.

DD2 takes place in a parallel world, it's not a sequel or a prequel. The parallel are somewhat explained in the previous game, but the information isn't needed for the story of the second game and will be explained again in DD2 anyway since the very existence of the dragon/arisen are tied to it. .

Some people who played the first one noticed reused assets and animation in the videos we saw of DD2. There's also a reasonable risk that this is a cash grab and may not compare very well to the first. So DD1 may be better.

I keep hearing this "reused assets" thing, and frankly, it is one of the dumbest takes I've heard, oh a cyclops is acting like a cyclops from the first game, what big deal breaker that is,
Oh some moves from the first game has carried over, so character does the same animation.

Almost as if the game is a sequel, Why do people expect completely brand new animations, or better yet, i noticed armor and weapons from the first game, yet the glow up they got makes them look nearly unrecognizable.

Sounds like people do not want dragons dogma to look or feel like dragons dogma.

Just means that you shouldn't pre-order it (or anything for that matter). Wait about 3 days after the game has released and see the praise or lament from the suckers that did pre-order it.

Let them be the test subjects, they opted into it for a gold-plated chestpiece (with garbage stats) after all.

again with the similar assets... of course they will use some the same clothing in DD2 even if it is in a different reality because it still plays on the same continent just not in Gransys but on the main Land and from what i saw many of the clothings that got moved over have Better Textures and it seems like the Clothing physics got better too

I said there was a risk, not that it will be a cash grab, I honestly suggest people give it a few days for people to play and see what people think. Like the person before you said, it would be best to not pre order it and let other people figure it out for you. But it your money so you do you.
