Can someone explain to me the squad system ?
What is the point of unlocking and leveling other squads if we can already fully customize what we start with ?

look at it this way, you can have an assault squad, a sniper squad, a rifle squad, an Anti tank squad etc and if your squad gets wiped you get a cooldown anyway before you can respawn

It seems to be the biggest reason is personal preference. Since you don't start with some of the more specialty sqauds such as engineers, mortar teams or anti tank teams then you would need to have new squads to use their weapons. I don't think there is much point in having multiple of squads like Riflemen unless you want multiple large squads, if it's even possible to have 2 copies of the same squad equipped. Aside from the obvious fact that you can't use the same squad until they come back after they're been wiped out.

If I am misunderstanding you, then I apologize. However, I'll try to keep it broad. If you're talking about specific types, such as "Infantry" which is what everyone starts out with, that first default infantry squad is a "Infantry class 1" squad, in which your experience gained, as well as the points you spend on the three skill trees, only affects and applies to that specific "Infantry class 1" squad. This becomes crucial as you unlock other classes of identical soldier types. There are actually many factors at play with leveling up squads/vehicles/soldiers. Examples would be things like the amount of "perk points" accumulated by each individual soldier each time they level up, as well as their max amount of perk points possible. Another key factor you must consider is as you unlock higher class identical squads (like Infantry class 3, which is typically late in your research trees) these individual soldiers will tend to "develop" higher abilities. What I mean is an Engineer class 1 may only reach a max perk point of 16 in their Mobility perk tree, whereas an Engineer class 2 will achieve between 18-22 perk points at their highest possible soldier level. Also, each specific squad has their own "starting trait", MachineGunner class 3 for Germany, for example, starts out with "100% more health restored with medpacks" perk, so every single MG class 3 soldier you recruit for Germany will have this starting perk, regardless of whatever squad you put them in.

I'm going to leave it at that, to keep this from being a novel, but this isn't even scratching the surface, Enlisted is a complex game. Learning the intimate details, advantages and drawbacks of this Soldier/Squad/Vehicle skill tree system will help your overall gameplay and score tremendously.

And just to add one though on my rant, there's a lot of posts here that complain how unfair the balance of the game is. No, not really ^^^^ that is what veteran players are talking about with "skill issue". New players are obviously not going to know this system as intimately as we do. My soldiers are OPTIMIZED. They don't flinch at danger, they know how to breath to keep themselves steady. My engineer has been doing push ups, he has enough material to build for 3 days straight (those are jokes lol, based on actual perks in the game) There's tons to learn about Enlisted and the community is with you folks for your whole journey <3

The entire point is to force you to spend money, want to upgrade that new tier 3-4 weapon you just unlocked? Oh wait you can't, you have to level ANOTHER rifleman squad you don't want to use and start with no squad upgrades of ANY kind, devs could have easily added accelerated research to the squad upgrades like the research tree to make this less painful, but they would rather try to scam people out of your money. Avoid this game these devs delete discussions and threaten steam accounts if you speak out against them, make sure to leave a negative review and report them to Steam for TOS abuse, they deserve it...

Okay well I have never spent a single cent in this game. And clearly you didn't read my above post, explaining this exact reason why each individual squad ignores previously gained experience with like squads.

Why would I want to level up a new BR3 or BR4 weapon right away? Again, the soldiers I have already on my frontline are not quite able to handle this new shiny gun that well. Explain to me why I would WANT to put a new automatic and highly powerful (recoil) rifle on a soldier with extremely limited ability?

The TOS has nothing to do with Developer behavior, you're spreading misinformation (either you realize or you don't, but either one is very harmful to others) about their game. The developers made the right choices in this new system, they hand you the new shiny gun, and they sometimes hand you a new, "braver" and more talented soldier who can utilize said gun better than the Gomer Pyle they give as a default soldier.

EDIT: I'm sure the TOS are actually not in your favor here. A post claiming that the game is a purchase shill with other post detailing how it truly Free to Play is clearly violating Steam TOS.

Upgrading new squads allows to upgrade new weapons. In some cases it also allows to upgrade new versions of soldier classes with different passive abilities and slightly larger pool of ability points. If you have zero interest in both of these things, there is little point other than some form of completionism.

If you're referring to squads of the same type (ie, two different Engineer squads) then the reason is because they are different variant of that soldier and have different guns.

The first Squad levels up Engineers, and the second levels up Engineer II's, who have different passive perks and a larger pool of points for buying perks when they are leveled up.

Most squads also have a few weapons assigned to them, if you want to upgrade a specific weapon, you need to level up the squad associated with them. So its perfectly reasonable to sometimes only level them up the bare minimum (get the XP buffs and a couple upgrades to make the squad more viable in combat) get the upgrades for the gun/class you want and then drop the squad and go back to the maxed out squad you like.

Lastly, some of the squads have slightly different upgrade trees from their predecessor (For instance, Engineer II squad can build a Machine Gun nest, while the first Engineer squad cannot.)
