Rage is an interesting comparison : the textures had a lot of issues, going from a high-res and beautiful landscape to a ugly and very poorly detailled room, or hiccups when loading textures, etc... This was preventing the game to achieve the desired look, which was "realism". I still remember entering a basement room with ... Things. That were supposed to be microscopes.
Dishonored is trying to achieve a blurrier look, watercolor as stated previously. It reminds me a bit of the work of Edward Hopper, actually. As such, having a flat texture to represent ivy or lacking details on a helmet wasn't very counter-productive.
Re-installing will not fix the graphics issue; this game lacks in the graphics department.
The game is kinda supposed to look like a painting. But because the detail is so low the effect is lost most of the time which ends up making it look even worse (except on a few face textures, which are higher rez).
Graphics artists and designers generally work with high resolution textures and high polygon characters and game assets before games are optimized for different platforms. PC's can handle higher polygon counts and higher resolution textures and developers and publishers can include them for platforms that can handle it like the overkill powered PC.
At least RSI's Star Citizen will not have low graphics because it will be only for PC and possibly Mac and Linux. I'll continue playing Mass Effect 2, which has medium graphics also and try not to finish Dishonored in the hopes of a HD DLC coming out very soon : )
Cheers
The treatment Viktor Antonov's sublime art direction has received in this game is an absolute insult (both to him and us PC gamers) & infuriates me, so much so that after a couple of assassinations I haven't touched the game since.
You can call me shallow as much as you like, but when you have a visual artist of his caliber working on your project it's an absolute travesty to present the work in such poor resolution on a platform that doesn't have to compromise in this way.
Shadows? who needs them.
Light effects? wah useless
Texture detail? not needed, we are artists here, we do water colour paintings in our spare time.
Last but not least if you play one hour into the game you already seen 70-80% of the graphics it has to offer.
Aside from the very low technical quality of the graphics, they repeat throughout the game.
To me it looks like a good artist worked on the graphics but he was forced to make too many compromises, the game is a cheap and fast production that sacrifices quality for a fast buck.
Why spend on development when you can spend on getting moronic inflated reviews all over the net?
Spoiled.. 'interesting' choice of word to use in this context.
If you take the time to read the many threads & comments both on Steam & all over the web by those who dare mention they are not happy with the abysmal texture resolution etc, you'll soon realise that it's precisely because the gameplay & visual design is uniformly fantastic that the aforementioned stings so much for many of us, don't forget the game was supposedly designed so that players pay very close attention to their surroundings.
If it doesn't bother you too much.. great I'm happy for you!, but please don't imply that those of us irritated with the technical shortcomings (we are all playing on PC's here right?) NOT the 'art style' (god how I hate this sort of inane terminology & having to make the distinction!) are in some way missing the 'point' of gaming.. you just make yourself sound very silly indeed.
Yes, gameplay is very important but being able to read the "Whale Oil Tax" and all the other posters etc.would be great for immersion.
The quality of graphics and great gameplay do not have to be mutually exclusive especially considering that the high quality textures and high polygon models are already in existense but just not included because all platforms can't handle it as well and same goes for Skyrim, and Mass Effects.
Why not include DirectX11 and tesselation for PC?
Xbox was named after DirectX yet it is stuck with something like DirectX 8.1 therefore this is not a coincidence. Both Mass Effect 2,3 and Skyrim use Direct X 9 for the same reasons :(
I couldn’t agree more. If Dishonored was a mediocre game, I wouldn’t care about the graphics. It’s a great game, so I want and expect more.
