And now for something completely different - a question about actual gameplay instead of complaints/praises.

How do you get the combination to the safe? I juice him a few times and get the key to his place but I can't get any farther and eventually he dies.

You need to talk to the Thug leader. He gives you a mission to find out what happened to his man. Do that then he he will give you a quest to get the Vault number. Now when you shock the dealer he will give you the combo.

There's actually a slight complication: if you already spoke to the art dealer and then go speak with Slackjaw, you won't be able to get the safe combination from him.

But I think you can still unlock it if you know the code, though it's one of multiple combinations: 138, 656, 696, or 879.

Well I still have a save right before I talk to the dealer so that's okay. Weird, you'd think that being to his place, and the fact that there's a clue when you first go to Slackjaw to find the safe combination, would be enough.

Before go to the art dealer, go to Slackjaw and accept his quest to find his missing assistant, after finish that, back to slackjaw, and he will give you the quest to get the safe combination in return for non-lethal elimination of pendleton brothers.

You can also save a woman in one of the back alleys from the cit watch, she will give you the key to the art dealer. I have never had to accept the 2nd Slackjaw sidequest to be able to torture the code out of the art dealer, so I think saving the woman does the same thing.
