What counts for a "clean hands" run?
I've been trying to find out what counts against a clean hands run.
I've been assuming rats and the guys during the emrpess's ambush don't count against it.
Any other ones that don't? What about the "assassinate [npc]" missions, or stuff like the "contaminate the elixer supply" one from Granny Rags?

Basically don't kill people. If it looks humanoid, let it live. If the game tells you "kill X" look around and find another solution, there is one, always.
I recommend also leaving the Hounds alive, but that doesn't seem to be necessary.
Other animals are fair game.

That Granny Rags sidemission doesn't result in deaths that would count against you.

Fun ^w^
Thank you for the help.

You're right. Daud's assassins in the Prologue do not count against the Clean Hands achievement. Nor do rats or hagfish. Most guides say that wolfhounds are okay to kill as well but, I just avoided them. No one seems to mention anything about river krusts, although I can tell you, from my experience, that shooting them with sleep darts is okay and will not negate the
achievement. I don't think normal bolts will either but, I can't say for certain.

As SentoX says, do not kill anything humanoid...that includes weepers. Also, be careful what you do with unconcious bodies. Don't leave them in situations where they are vulnerable. If they die later because of a fall, explosion, drowning or rats, you are responsible for thier death and will not get the achievement.

Contaminating the elixer supply won't count against you either. However, by accepting the mission from Granny Rags, she will show up in a later mission where dealing with her without killing her will be kinda tricky. For the Clean Hands achievement, I'd recommend not even talking to her in the "High Overseer Campbell" mission, although this will prevent you from getting the Gentlemen Caller and Street Conspiracy Achievements during this playthrough.

Darn.
How hard is dealing with her without killing her?
Worth reloading to an earlier save?/Not finishing her mission?

Just to confirm, you are allowed to kill River Krusts, I would't waste sleepdarts on them since a single normal bolt does as good a job of taking them out. And Dunwall will be a better place without them around :D

That Granny Rags event will only trigger if you do every side mission for both Granny Rags and Slackjaw, so there is no need to abort it half way through or even go back and load an earlier save.
The reward for the elixir contaminating is also very good, especially so early in the game.

Glad to hear you confirm that. Thanks. I used a sleep dart because I wasn't sure and just wasn't willing to take a chance on having to do the mission over again.

If I recall correctly, the Granny Rags problem in the "Flooded District" mission happened even though I had only done the two side missions for Granny Rags, and none for Slackjaw, mainly because of the two runes she gave me. But, that was a while ago and I may be mistaken.

Granny Rags is actually easy to take out without killing her by using nothing more than a sleeping dart because of her nature the rats will not attack her
I didn't mean to imply that it was hard to deal with Granny Rags. But, it can be tricky. The tricky part is, you have to hit her with a sleep dart AFTER the furnace destroys her cameo, otherwise when her unconcious body vanishes, it counts as a death. You have to wait until she disolves, then re-spawns as a hostile. Then, you can put her down with sleep darts and preserve the achievement. Generally, if you wait until she finishes her rant, then you can safely take her out.

I found this out the hard way and had to do the "Flooded District" mission all over again.

Hahaha, how thoughtful of you, putting river crusts to sleep instead of killing them. Dunwall without river crusts isn't Dunwall. (yes, I like to be spit at my back and die a horrible and embarrassing death)
A double choke (after burning her cameo, as Cyberwiz said, she will blink to you as a neutral, take down, then she will come back as a hostile) is good too I think -yes, I am that stingy about ammo- though you'll need the power to bend time.

You can kill all of your main targets (Campbell, Pendleton brothers, etc.) without failing the achievement, but there are nonlethal ways to dispose of all of them (including the Lord Regent and Havelock).

Pretty sure killing anyone, even your targets, negates a Clean Hands run.

You do not have to prevent deaths, as long as you don't play any part -- eg, the watchmen who get eaten by rats in the sewers after Coldridge. But if you knock someone unconscious and then let rats eat them, that does negate your run.

That's correct. You must find the NON-lethal ways to deal with all the target characters throughout the game.

River Kusts are worth 25 coins each, sometimes 50 coins, so asap get upgraded to 30 darts and go hunting if darts work for you. In the Flooded District I get them all. Though when they are in a nice tight bunch a grenade is the ticket. Whooooosh! Ca-Ching! :-)

You can't pause the game to jack off at ANY point during the campaign.
