Dishonored

Dishonored Crashing on Startup
I finished Dishonored over a year ago and felt like replaying it recently, however whenever I start it up I crash the moment I get to the title screen. I've tried all sorts of suggestions to try fix this problem, to no avail:

- Launching in Admin mode
- Launching in compatibility mode
- Launching the game in windowed mode via steam launch commands
- Editing config files
- Reinstalling the game
- Deleting save files and disabling steam sync

I'm not sure what else I can do that might possibly fix this. For reference, my PC specs are as follows:

Intel Core i5-2320 CPU @ 3 GHz

8GB DDR3 RAM

AMD Radeon R9 270 GPU

Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Motherboard

Windows 7 Ultimate Edition OS

If any other details are needed I'll add them where possible. Its worth noting that when I last played Dishonored, I was using a Nvidia GeForce GT 630 Graphics card; I wonder if the new graphics card that I have is somehow causing the issue, but I've not seen any reports about it being incompatible with this game.

I'll appreciate any suggestions people have. I'm at my wits end :ftired:

You could upload your save files to a file-hosting site like Mega and I could download them and see if that changes anything?

I have never been able to get this damn game to run since the day I bought it. The same thing happens, it starts fine, gets to the scree where it says press any button and just crashes.

My computer is a potato running Vista. This game runs slow at first but after 30 sec or so Its running at 50-60 fps with little issues. Maybe everyone needs to go get some potatos

try starting with "-windowed" in your game launch options (right click on game name - then properties and look for it), then switch to fullscreen from video options within the game.

The fact you need to do this manually is horrible, but that´s the way it worked for me.

You aswell? I wonder if an update for Dishonoured came along and broke the game on some fundamental level.

For those having trouble coming back to Dishonored after a break from the game, I came across a fix that worked for me! Somone in another sub (Scoyn, whomever you are, you're a hero!) suggested this. Not sure how to quote from the Steam client, but here is what worked for me.

***This will bork all of your old saves, so if you care, backup all the files in the 205100 folder first. That path is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\yoursteamID#\205100

Turned out my old saves were actually the issue, both on Steam Cloud, AND on my laptop. I wanted to start the game afresh anyways, so I didn't care. I tried it once by just deleting the files, and when I restarted, I chose to download my saves from Steam Cloud. Fired up the game again, and kept getting the crash. To get rid of the Steam Cloud saves, you need to create new one(s) in offline mode and then upload those to the cloud.

So! Here's a step by step:
1) Install game
2) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\yoursteamID#\205100
3) Restart Steam in offline mode.
4) Delete files in game/remote folder.
5) Delete remotecache.vdf file.
6) Launch game.
7) Play until you get a chance to save, and save the game. Then quit the game.
8) Relaunch Steam with all the fancy Steam Cloud stuff turned on, in online mode.
9) When it says that your saves are not the same, choose to upload ones on your pc to Steam Cloud.
10) Should be good to go!

Again, this will delete all of your old savegame data, but since I couldn't find out if there was a specific single file messing things up, I didn't care. Just wanted to get past the opening screens and PLAY THIS GAME AGAIN.

I've run the game a few times just now in online mode, and it appears to work fine. If some of you are far and don't want to redo a bunch of stuff, you can possibly run the game while Steam is in offline mode. Not sure if the saves will be corrupt or if that'd even work, but offline seemed to get me to the loading screen and able to start a new game, at least.

Hope this helps some of you!
