Dishonored
(SPOILERS) What's the point of letting lady boyle live?
I was doing the lady boyle's last party mission and talked to the dude who offered to take her off my hands without killing her, and I was wondering what the point of that was. I couldn't seem to get to the cellar without alerting the entire party to my prescence so I ended up just killing her in the end.

Getting to the cellar is easy ... and that is an allowed area!
You arn't allowed up the stairs and the guard that challeges you will patrol the cellar so if you keep tabs on where he is and check as waitresses come down and head back to the dining room with food.
It allows you to open the basement area choke the guard while he is alone in kitchen place him up high in the basement; clear the basement of rats then happily start investigating the upstairs area..
Upstairs there are also a lot of ways of avoiding the guards if you want to!

Both choices with Lady Boyle are bad choices for her! Either killed or living with a Madman. I loved the mansion though and getting around and into all the hidden spots.

Simply put...it's available as an option for performing the non-lethal solution for the mission. It's the easiest way to achieve your goal, too. After talking to Miss White and Lord Brisby, you have all the info to identify your target. With the right approach, she is easlity convinced to go to the cellar, where you can then knock her out with no witnesses. The guard and maids there should be no problem.

I agree with cyberwiz with the only change being that the Lady Boyle you need to kidnap changes on each playthrough! With the information coming from Miss White
So one will want to go to the cellar ...another to her bedroom .... but I cannot remember where the third wanted to go!

The third wants to go to the music room. That one is the hardest as you can't just knock her out and carry her to the cellar like with the other two. Also: as far as I know she is the only one to leave the room. The other two will stay in the cellar/the bedroom forever (as long as you don't attack or cause a ruckus) while she's going to get bored after a short while and starts wandering again.

How the Boyle Ladies react when you approach them has been told differently by so many people that I decided to check it out by doing several playthroughs to determine what actually happens under different circumstance. What I found was, a reliable way to get your target to walk to the cellar. After you determine which Boyle sister is your target, either by reading Esma's note in her bathroom upstairs or by talking with Miss White and Lord Brisby, find her and start a conversation ...

If it's Esma, depending on what you say to her, she will either go up to her bedroom or down to the cellar. To get her to walk to the cellar, tell her she is going to be assassinated and that you can help. Ask her to meet you in the cellar. There's a boat waiting.

If it's Waverly, again depending on what you say, she may just wander around or go to the cellar. To be sure she goes to the cellar, tell her that her life is in danger and you know who is going to kill her. She will agree to meet you but, she says she won't wait long.

If it's Lydia, once more depending on what you say, she will go to the music room or go to the cellar. To get her to the cellar, tell her you're here to save her life. Then, tell her you have a message for her. Someone's going to meet her in the cellar. Lydia will walk away from you without saying anything but, she'll make her way to the cellar.

I've repeated these scenerios several times and each time they give the same desired results.

It may be an allowed area, but if you weren't "escorted" upstairs by Esma, he will be aggressive if he finds you in the kitchen.

Good info! Thanks!

I've never had a problem with the guard that patrols the kitchen. The worst that's happened to me was if I got too close or bump into him is, he tells me to "Get lost. You shouldn't be here." Then, he just walks away. The problem that I HAVE had is, when Miss White stands in the doorway between the stairs and the dining room. Sometimes, she moves if you bump into her but sometimes she gets stuck there. Kind of a bother but nothing serious.

And you are very welcome.

Oh yeah, she does that to me all the time, sometimes even going part way up the stairs towards the bedroom! So annoying! And if you're carrying Esma down, she'll alert and ruin the run!

But yeah, on a run where I followed Waverly downstairs, I got too close to him in the kitchen and he kicked me. I don't recall if that caused the maids to alarm, but I'm pretty sure I reloaded a previous save to avoid the possibility of that ruining my Ghost run (not that I got Ghost anyway, but still).

Maids can spot and set the alarm off if your carrying any body as that makes them scared obviously.
I just used Dark vision so that I know where the maids are and often one leans against a wall in the stair case leading to the kitchen. Which blocks you if your carrying a body and don't want to be discovered.

If your good you can disable all alarms before going upstairs either pickpocketing key from guard or using possesion to get into the locked room.

Generally I used the party to improve my pickpocketing skill quite a lot as most guests have good coin and they don't much care if you steal it..... if you get spotted they warn you and you must leave that area or room at the least.

So once spotted I'd head outside and do the duel go back steal some more... Head off exploring different ways to escape the place. Before continuing to loot the place

Or save before each pickpocketing so you can reload and not be discovered and eventually try to get them all.

For some reason, that isn't a problem, at least for me. The guard just ignores me so long as he doesn't see me go up to the second floor.

I'm fairly certain he isn't referring to the kitchen just the upstairs area but I haven't tested
