Wanted poster? I don't remember but when did I ever show myself so that people knew what I looked like before going to the party? :\
Also, it doesn't make sense if the Watch one one side of the door are fine with me in my mask, while on the other side they're like "I KNOW EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE!". Lady Boyle was gone for only but a for mins. For all anybody knows, she was going for a ♥♥♥♥ and not trying to get any of it on her white outfit. Oh no!
Just seems more buggy than something that was intended. If it was intended, it was sloppy.
I still got everything from the safe and since I had the key I just used the back door to the sewers, which I couldn't access before. So even though I wasn't actually detected, and nobody saw me do anything to Lady Boyle and nobody should know my mask (since it was made by Piero - unless I'm forgetting something), then the conclusion jumping is rather spectacular.
I'm past this mission anyway now, so it matters not.
Even one of the Boyle sisters can work her connections to get a message and a gift of thanks to Corvo that makes it to the Hounds Pub before Corvo himself can return from the party. That should tell you something right there. Remember that all those involved with the killing of the Empress are also part of the conspiracy to frame Corvo for it. They know who's coming... it's why they are all guarded up to the eyeballs.

Is there another one I missed? If so, do you recall where it is?
I used a rat tunnel to get to the private quarters, found the identity of the target Boyle, went out Esme's balcony door, dueled Lord Shaw for Treavor, then went back in -- and within seconds, the whole place was hostile. The first room (with the food) was fine, including talking to one of the Boyle sisters roaming, but as soon as I went to the hall and another sister was alerted to me, everyone started attacking.
I was never found in an off-limit area, though I did leave guard bodies upstairs. Could that be it?
BTW, if you want a good place to store the bodies where no one will ever find them, put them in the attic.
If you're playing for "Ghost" your wanted posters will display a question mark instead of a face.
Your mask only shows up if you've alerted people during your missions.
That'd explain it then... when I had that dodgy "not detected but detected" incident in the boyle estate because the AI immediately knew it was I who did something with the woman just because she took ages to go for a ♥♥♥♥.
