If you free an existing group of rats, say by opening a door that releases them so they roam around and eventually find and kill a guard, it does not count as a kill. However, if someone is killed by a rat swarm you summoned with your powers, that does count as a kill.

FYI, contrary to popular belief, if you leave an unconscious body where an existing rat swarm eats (kills) it, that will NOT count as a kill against you.
thanks, but never mind, I gave up on that, I threw unconscious body down the stairs, I found it dead after one hour of backtracking... :D

Giving up on the no-kill playthrough? Sorry to hear that but, it can be frustrating, playing the entire game without knowing if someone you left unconscious died unintentionally. You found just one of a dozen ways that can happen.

Indeed, I believe so.

Generally, the way I manage it is to choke and hit "F" to hold the person at the same time... then I dump the sleeping body in a safe spot where there's no rats, preferably where it won't be found, like a small room with a door (closet, bathroom, etc.), safe spot on a rooftop where they won't slide off, etc. Typically, I take out nearly everyone so I can get to the pick-ups, so the sleeping bodies pile up.

I've done a Ghost/Clean Hands run three or four times now, so it's possible and not too difficult once you get the hang of it (omfg, stay away from Granny Rags, though). However, I'd kill to have access to stats during the level... getting to the end of a map to find out I was detected or killed someone can be downright devastating given the length of the levels (and I've usually been trying to get all the coins, books, etc. too).

You really don't need to worry about rats finding the unconscious bodies. If rats find the body and eat it, that doesn't count against you as a kill. Just one less thing to worry about. Unfortunately, there are still a dozen more ways an unconscious body can accidently die.

This is SO true. That's the only thing I find lacking in Dishonored. But, it's significant, to me. I miss having stats available anytime.

Not sure I believe rats eating an unconscious person doesn't count as a kill... I haven't tried that to confirm it, and the rest of the Internet believes otherwise. Since I'm trying to hide bodies anyway, getting them out of sight serves the same purpose.

I went looking for a savegame viewer the other day to see if at least I could pull kill/alert stats out that way for every session, but I came up empty. Better to repeat a couple hours of a level than the whole level. Hopefully they put a good stats feature in D2.

I understand your skepticism about the rats. I know all the more reputable sites like Wiki and even Bethesda forums, say that rats killing the unconscious bodies will count as a kill. I accepted that too, until I happened to notice that I ended a mission with no kills yet, I knew a rat swarm had eaten (killed) an unconscious body that I had layed on the ground. I replayed the mission with that situation in mind and proved (to myself anyway) that it did not count against me as a kill. I've since tested and proven it time and time again.

Interesting! I may have to give this a try on a short level I don't mind replaying. In the meantime, I think I'm gonna steel myself for a High Chaos run on the main campaign for the first time. Maybe DCT won't seem so bad by comparison.

A good level to test it on is Mission 5: Lady Boyle's Last Party. Whether in Low Chaos or High, there's always a predictable rat swarm around the back corner of the apartment building right next to the Boyle Estate. There's also always a guard patrolling along side the building.

And, I wish you good luck in your pursuit of the DCT achievements.

Good one, and easy to get through quickly. Thank you!
