Artist's safe bugged
So i got myself the safe combination by torturing the owner... and it won't work. My mission notes say the code is 696, and when the safe has 696 selected it still says "combination required".

i've looked up various possible alternative codes, but not a single code seems to actually open the safe. :/

I don't actually have a save from before the mission. And i'd rather not have to do the entire mission :/

You're trying to open Dr. Galvani's safe with the Art Dealer's code.
(Good job adding the screenshots, I can tell it's the Doctor's safe from the light on the wall on the left.)
The Art Dealer is in a completely different building.

Well, that cleared things up then. I never found any different safe, and back when i looked up galvani's safe combination as a hint online, i found something mentioning the golden cat and assumed this. I've already moved past this part of the game now, but glad to know it's my derpyness that's the issue, not a bug. :P

I was so confused trying to navigate the streets and rooftops around that area that I quit playing the game for over a year, so don't feel bad.
If you play a second time, the streets will seem more familiar and so much less confusing!

um don't mean to brag but there's Way Points that lead you to where you need to go I'm guessing you had those disabled

I get confused in most any game that's not totally on rails. :) I was completely lost on the rooftops of Thief, for a looooonngg time. And that's a fairly linear game. :/

Ditto squared!! The Thieves' Highway did me in. It was like a European roundabout I couldn't get out of... around and around, and realizing "I've been here before - 4x already!"

I heard that! :D

The waypoints disable themselves as soon as you've completed the objective - as such, i had no waypoints outside of the waypoint leading back to the boat.

i do know that there's an option to disable Waypoints all together even if you do have Objectives that's what i meant
I'm in the same area myself, and the two buildings are quite confusing, since the Art Dealer's Apartment and Dr. Galvani's Office are across the street from each other, and they both have very similar interiors.
