Quite a few spoilers, and some parts of the plot won't be as impactfull if you don't know how they fit into the rest of the world.
While the DLC (Knife of Dunwall, Brigmore Witches) are not needed to finish D1 or neccessary to understand what happens in D2, i highly recommend to grab hold on them and grind through them.
In the main story you play as Corvo, who avenges the murder of the empress and saves Emily and stuff. In the 2 DLC, wich belong together and are ultimately part 1 and part 2 of a second storyline, you are Daud. The two story arcs are heavily interwoven with each other and are crossing at some points. The 2 DLC add a lot of backlight to the events in the main campaign and give you a much better understanding of what's really going on.
Finishing the main campaign plus 2 DLC with high chaos made me start the whole game anew with low chaos, because for the first time i really felt the consequences of my playstyle and was really stunned and wanted to change the outcoming of events.
Spoiler tag that.
Don't worry, I see spoilers coming a mile way and my eyes are able to turn away instantly, I have no idea what the post above yours says :p
